The 7th Dragoons surrounded him and his followers, who surrendered. Cetewayo has been sent to Cape Town. Peace is now regarded as certain. Another of Cetewayo’s brothers has surrendered, with an immense number of cattle and guns. Strained relations between Geimany and Russia continue. An Austro-German alliance is pro jected. The Standard states that complete anarehy re-signs in Rouraelia. Eight thousand destitute Mussulmans at Stamhoul are afraid to return home. Slave committees openly advocate the extermination of the Turkish population. Calcutta, September loth. The Times in a leading article announces that the Ameer of Cabnl will be called upon 1 1 co-operate with the British advance, and recognise publicly the justice and expediency of measures to punish the recent outrage. The Russian Press unanimously advocates helping the Afghans. London, September 22ud. Afghan news is conflicting. The report of the Ameer’s death is not confirmed and the origin of the massacre is unexplained. London papers accept the statement of the revolt as placed by the Ameer’s brother, presiding at Herat. The Press generally, while describing the disaster due to the Ministerial policy, insists that the affront must he promptly avenged. The Times declares the disaster ought not to alter the resolve of placing a British Resident in charge of Afghan cities. A large draft of Home regiments has been ordered.
