1 1 will be remembered that some years ago there were in Dunedin two sergeants of police— the end named Farrell and the other named Ryan. Stone scandal occurcd concerning Farrell’s wife and 11 van. A quarrel ensued and a shot was tired. Ryan stood bis trial for attempting to murder Farrell hut was acquitted by a ja>y of his countrymen. Since then-llyan was tried for murder on the West Coast ; but again be was aqnitted. When Farrell now a don elive was in Wellington a short time ago, Ryan suddenly appeared upon the scone, lie followed Farrell wherever that astute officer went. Detective Farrell from no npoarent cause left tor Wanganui. It is said that he asked to be removed in order to escape the presence of his persecutor, but to Wanganui Ryan followed him. There he hunted him like a fate. Farrell went up country ; Hyan went too. Farrell came back to Wellington ; so did Ryan. Then Farrell went to Auckland, where he now is ; but Ryan is there too. A friend of Farrell’s interviewed Ryan one day and asked him why he followed Farrell. Ryan replied “ that he believed Farrell had shot him at Dunedin years ago in order to get me banged for murder, an I (hat he would in revenge hunt him to the brink of the grave. ” Tiiis grim story reminds one of Tom Hood’s Dream of Eugene starting up with horror, and exclaiming—- “ Rut still uo sleep for the restless clay, Will waver or mould allow, The horrid thing pursues me still; It stands before me now !” —Wellington Chronicle.
