THE LONGWOOD REEFS.

—o The contract for driving the 400 ft. tunnel in Print’s claim has not advanced any for some time past, the hands having been engaged bringing down a permanent tramway. There are still about SOft to drive, and water is plentiful, though not seriously so. A few weeks ago some interest was excited by a find of some 3lh>z. of very coarse reef gold by Yuille amt C». This parry obtained the gohl from an alluvial claim which they aio working, and the quantity named was obtained in six weeks time. The gold was very coarse, one nugget weighing about 3ozs, and a number of others about 1 oz, each. The gohl could not have travelled far, as it had no appearance of being water worn, and particles of quartz appeared in the crevices. It is quite possible, however, that the stone may have travelled some distance, and afterwards becoming decomposed has broken up leaving the gold. A number of other claims have in consequence been taken up, ami it is reported that one or two other parties have struck the same lead as Yuille and party. The Invercargill Company have abandoned the workings in the tunnel near the boundary of the Wallace Company’s claim, they In-ing afraid of trespass. They are now cutting a tunnel with a view to intercept the reef in a different part of the claim ; hut as the Wallace Company has now abandoned their ground, it is probable it will be taken up by the Inver, cargill Company, and work resumed in the tunnel.
