DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL.

The Annual Meeting of Subscribers was held in the Library Hall on Friday evening last the 31st instant, Mr B. Naylor, President, in the Chair. The Chairman having explained the object of the Meeting called on the Secretary to lead the report of the Retiring Committee. The following reports were then read:— To the Subscribers : . In terms of the Ordinances which the Dunstan District Hospital and all similar Institutions are incorporated, we the Com- . mittee of Management for the past year convene this Meeting with the object of tendering our resignation, and asking you . to elect a new Committee in our stead, we, however, take advantage of the opportunity to report to you on our conducting of the Institution for the past year, and we will ask of you if that our efforts on behalf of -A the Institution have not produced the reV’sult you could have desired to give us credit for whatwehavedone, our one desire having been themaintaining the usefulness of th«lnstitution withadue regard to economy. .Atthecommenceraentofthe year, and when we took office tlrire w T as a debit balance of L 93 2s 91, the which has been reduced by only a few shillings, as there is now a debit of L 92 15s 2i. Upon examining the Treasurer's and Collector’s hooks, however, we find there has been a sum of L 35 13s Od collected since the above balance was 8-ruck, the which, with Government Subsidy at the rate of LI to every LI collected ■would reduce our debit to L2l 15s 2d and show a profit on this year’s transactions of L7l 7s 7d—the reason of this somewhat peculiar state of things arises from a new regulation on the part of the Colonial Treasury, which now requires a swum statement of all Receipts and Expenditure up to the 31st December, 1878, to be supplied, and as this L 35 10s od, in various sums was received by your Treasurer after the 31st of December, 1878, he was unable to include it in the receipts for the past year, and as this new Regulation is an innovation and presumably, though not in actual fact puts our position in a worse light than it actually is, we will ask leave to introduce in the published statement the sources from which the L 35 10s 0d was gathered, not alone to show onr actual position, but to account to the subscribers for these monies. Though there is in the preceding figures a profit on the year’s transactions of over L7O, we cannot but notice a material falling off in the receipts. In those localities that suffered by the late floods, we can thoroughly understand why the donations shou'd have decreased, hut we fail to see why those'localities, which have been equally prosperous as in previous years,, should have withheld their support. During the year Dr Button, who was in chirgo of the Institution ■when we took office, resigned his position, he having obtained the Surgeonship of the Invercargill Hospital. In his place your Committee from a number of applicants, selected Dr Leahy, who, we are pleased to say, has given every satisfaction in the performance of his duties to the patients, as well as to your Committee. It will be remembered that in the month of September last a mighty flood of water rushed down the Molyneux, washing away in its course the terraced banks. The terrace on which the Hospital buildin s stood wasbeing washed away, and the Vbole structure in danger of being carried away by the flood, a hasty consultation of the Members of Committee was held, and it was decided to remove back the building—though it was Sunday every one in the neighborhood who were aware of the facts of the case, came to the rescue and lent a helping hand, and after some seven or eight hours hard work, the buildings were cut up into sections and removed. An application was made to the Government, through the Member for the District, V. Pyke. Esq., for assistance, and the sum of L2OO was at once granted. Ten lers were then immediately called for tenders for the re-erection of the Building at a higher level, and that, of Mr Charnock, accepted. The Building is now r nearly completed, but though not quite so large, it is thought it will be more convenient. The thanks of the subscribers are due to all, who so willingly and cheerfully gave their assistance in the removal of the building, as also to Mr Pyke in obtaining the vote of money from the Government, and your Committee will recommend that an expression of opinion be given. During the year resolutions were adopted for establishing a Lying-in Ward in connection with the Institution, as yet, it has not been made use of, your Committee do not, however doubt that wnen the building is completed. and every thing is in fair working order it will he utilized—the idea emanated at some of the outlying districts where not alone great trouble is experienced in obtaining proper assistance in midwifery cases, but at times, unless at great expense, it cannot be had, and your Committee, in taking up the idea, thought that by so doing, the usefulness of the Institution would he materially increased. During the year your Committee have held seventeen meetings, at which the attendance was—Mr Naylor, President, 15 ; W. L. Simpson, Vice President, 13 ; J. Afewcns, Treasurer, 16 ;Geo. Fache, Secretary, 17; James Hdt, 16; J U. Cambridge 16 ; W. Auckland, 14 ; C. Attffeld, 12 ; Rev. MrDewe, 10 ; C P. Beck, 6 ; M. Sampson, Tinkers. 1 ; Mr N. Anderson, 1. Beyond a further reference to the laxity on the part of some to subscribe to the Institution, and the expression of an earnest hope that onr successors may be more liberally sunoorted in their efforts to keep ©pan the doors of the Institution and to maintain its usefulness, and sincere thanks to those who have subscribed during the year, the more particularly to those who bo judiciously- assists I at the Auction Bazaar hold in Cly le. in aid of the Hospital, and by which lit 10 oi l was raised. Your Committee fail to see they have any further remarks to make they accordingly tender tluir resignation, " f 1
