The ship Northern, from London for Sydney took lire, and is supposed to be lost with all hands off the Snares. Greek Commissions have been appointed f for rectifying the Tmk'sh frontier. Yakoob Khan has arrived at Jellalabad. This is regarded as a sign of submission. December 28. A letter from the Queen expresses her heartfelt thanks for the universal sympathy shown in her affliction. A plot has been discovered to assassinate the Emperor of Austria. A difficulty has arisen about Biitish jurisdiction in Cyprus. Italy contesting it. Prince Bismarck has written a letter to the President of the Federal Council, advocating a protcit’.oiiist po' cy December 30. The report of the ar ival of Yakoob Khan at Jellalabad is confirmed. The marriage of the Duke cf Connaught is fixed for March 13. General Roberts has held a Durbar at j Jellalabad, where all the chiefs of the Afghan frontier were assembled, and there he announced to them that henceforth Great Britain was to be sovereign Power. A riot, originating among the students at Kiel, produced a great disturbance and bloodshed. The tro .ps were called out, and fired among the rioters, with the result that 80 students were killed. January 1. The City of Glasgow Bank call will realise LBOO,OOO The Secretary has been released. and becomes a Grown witness. The Khan of Kelat is desirous of co-ope-rating wi hj the Biitish advance on Candahar. The City of G'aagow Bank pays a divi dead of five shillings on February 3. A plot to kill Piince Milan of Servia has been discovered. January 1. The British fleet has returned to Port I Ismid. I A gun exploded on board H.M.S. Thunderer at Port Ismid, dest oying the turret, killing seven and wounding 40 of the crew, Bo.MBAy, January I. General Stuart advances on Candahar to daa through the Gwaija and the Kjojuk Jfits. It is stated that the town is weakly garrisoned. The Governor of Candahar is preparing for a vigorous defence. The hil'men have again stopped traffic in the Khyher Pass. Four of the Ameers regiments have deeufcwl. Tiree fourths of General Biddulph’s division are on the Candahar Plains. A general advance has been ordered.
