CRICKET.
—o— The Secretary of the Clyde Cricket Cub has handed us the following letter, with a view to its publication, and which he informs us he has sent to the secretaries of the Ci icket Clubs at Queenstown, Lawrence and Naaeby ; also eo the Clubs of Cromwell and Alexandra—with,an additional note to the two latter asking them if they will assist in making up an eleven worthy the Vincent County. We not only most willingly give the letter publicity, so that it may create discussion, but we kindly thank the Secretary for his thoughtfulness, as we are thereby enabled, before the public verV diet i< given, to give our opinion —We un hesitatingly approve of the idea, and must pronounce it as the happiest that could have been conceive 1, We hold that the promot ing of manly sports, and the fostering of a friendly ri /airy between neighboring districts is equally the duty of local governing bodies as that of binding them together by «eans of roads and bridges ; and we hope e sugges ion contained in the letter to the united counties of Lakes, ManintotO, Tuapeka, and Vincent will be taken up and acted upon in a right spirit. By a strange coincidence a contemporary, in its last issue throws out the suggestion that the counties of Lakes and Vincent should combine and present a trophy to be competed for in the cricket field. The following is the letter referred to : To the Secretary Dear. Sir, —It has been proposed here by some influential members of the community to organise an Annual County Cricket Match from selected Elevens from the Counties of Vincent, Lake, Maniototo, and Tuapeka—or as many of them as will agree thereto—for a trophy to he selected by a joint committee of the whole. Tne conditions and times and place of playing to be arranged by such Committee. The vaiious County Councils will, we f eel sure, contribute towards the expense of such a trophy if the matter is properly represented to them, and it is with the view of bringing it before the Vincent Council that we now address you. Pray let me have an answer as early as possible. Yours, etc, W. Faciie, Secretary.
