DUNEDIN SPRING RACES.

These Races took place on Friday and Saturday last, in the presence of but a very limited attendance, the number not being more than 2000. The following is a condensed report as taken from our Dunedin contemporaries : First Day. Maiden Plate, of 40 sovs. Entrance, 2 sovs. One mile and a half. Mr H. Goodman’s York, (C. Rudings) 1 Mr F. Pender’s Sir James, (S. Harris) 2 Dalesman, President and Shillelagh also started. Stella, Sapphira, and Ratcatcher were scratched. Time 2m. 5245, St. Andrew’s Handicap, of 100sovs., with a sweep of 3 sovs. Two miles. Mr R. J. Mason’s Mufti, 7ib 71b(Sinclair) 1 Mr Goodman’s Chancellor, Bst 31b (Allan) 2 Camballo, The Agent, and Cloth of Gold also ran. Luna and Blue Peter were scratched. Mason declared to win with Mufti, Betting Even on Chancellor ;3 to 1 against The Agent; 4to 1 Mufti, 5 to 1 anything else. Time, 3m. 44Js. Handicap Tp.otting Race, of 50 sovs. No Weight under lOst. Optional saddle or harness. Three miles. Air W. H. Taggart’s Our Pony, 473 yards (W. H. Taggart) 1 Mr H. J. Jewitt’s Polly, GOO yards (U. Brandon) 2 Seven others were entered, of whom 6 started. J ime 9m. 445. Ladies’ Purse, of 35 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Welter weight for age. Mr H. Good man’s York, Bst 12lb (Mr M‘Laren) 1 Mr W.‘ F. Neilson’s Te Whe.umarama 12at lib (Mr Craig) 2 Mr T. H. Dodson’s President, 10sfc 91b (MrJ. Hastie) 0 Starlight, Dalesman, Camelia, Vampire, and The Agent were scratched. Time, 2m. 25is. Spring Handicap, of 50 sovs. One mile and a distance. Mr R. Ray’s Lady Ellen, 7st (S. Harris) 1 Mr W. I l '. Neilson’s Luna, Bst lib ... 2 Six others also started. Time, 2min. 34sec. Benevolent Scurry, fora purse of sovs. One mile and a distance. Mr A M‘Master’s Larrikin (H. Gourley) 1 Mr W. L. Philp’s Snip (R. Hastie) 2 Mr A Smith’s Tramway (M. Allan) 3 This race was won easily by Larrikin in 2min. 23sec. finishing two lengths ahead of Snip, the 3 others being nowhere. Larrikin went three times round the course before Gourley succeeded in pulling him up. This closed the programme at 5.30.

Second Day. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 60 sovs. Two miles and a distance ; over ten flights of hurdles 3 feet 0 inches high. Mr W. F. Noilson’s Te Whetumarama, list 121b (D. O’Brien) 1 Mr H. Gourley’s Kildare, 9st Sib (J. Cotton) 2 Camelia, Shillelagh, Starlight, and Stella also ran. The Agent was scratched. Time, 3min. 37 4 sec. President’s Handicap, of 80 sovs, with a sweep of 2 sovs. The amount accruing from the sweep to go to the' second horse. One mile and a half. Nomin;tion 2 sovs ; acceptance, 2 sovs. Mr R. G. Mason’s Camballo, 7st 41b (S. Harris) X Mr W. F. Neilson’s Luna 7st 91b (11. Derritt) 2 Cloth of Gold, Chancellor, and Sir James also started. Time, 2min. 494 sec. Selling Race, of 40 sovs. One mile and a half weight for age. Mr Naumann’s Tommy, to bo sold for LlO, Gst 71b (Rudings) w.o. Grand Stand Handicap, of GO sovs. One mile and a quarter. Mr Mason’s Camballo, 7st 121b including olbs penalty (Sinclair) 1 Mr A. Smith’s Bcnjiroo, 7st 51b ... 2 Blue Peter, Lady Ellen, The Agent, and Sapphira also started. Chancellor and Luna were absentees. Mr Mason declared to win with Camballo. Time 2min. 21Jseo. Hack Race, of 15 sovs. Ono mile. Catch weights. Mr Naumann’s Tommy (Rudings) 1 Mr C. Turner’s Miss Alfred ... 2 The only two horses in the running we r o those placed above, as the four others tailed off very soon. Mr Nauraann’s Tommy won easily by two lengths, and the St. Kilda Maid was a poor third. Time, 2min. sseo. Consolation Handicap, of 39 sovs. One mile. f Mr S. Horsfall’s Ratcatcher, fist Sib (Carrington) 1 Mr A. Devery’s The Agent, 7st (Nioholls) 2 Four others ran. Time, Imin. 52sco. This event concluded the Spring Meeting of 1378.
