Tho Cromwell Jockey Club have decided to postpone their advertised Spring Race Meeting till a future date, as have, also, the Wanaka Club. His honor Judge Harvey wo understand will return to Dunedin by to day’s coach, he having issued instructions to the Registrars at Cromwell and Queenstown to adjourn the Courts, sine die. This stop is taken as it is impossible to travel further upcountry than Clyde. At Roxburgh, on Sunday last the 29th ultimo, a settlor named Philip Mylrea dropped down dead whilst ho was removing his household goods from his house which was threatened by tbe flood. Mr Samson, Auctioneer, requestu us to. intimate that the Sale of Cattle and Horses advertised for Monday Jnext, 7ih, Octpber,, at the Balmoral Hotel, near account of Mr Allen Cameron, is indefinitely postponed, in consequence of the flooded state of the rivers. Mr W. L. Simpson, District Coroner, held an enquiry at Blacks on Tuesday last inW the'cause of a'firS; which destroyed IKS': dwelling-house of Mn . J’eter Harrington, ; < butcher. The jury returned an open verdict. The house was fully covered by tho National Company in the sum of L3OO, the adjoining butcher’s shop, which was also insured, was but little injured. The Dunedin Herald says :—'‘The working survey of tho Strathtaieri Railway from the Chain Hills to tho Taieri River at Mullochy Gully, and also from the Rough Ridge to Clyde, has so far advanced that contracts may bo called for immediately on the line being authorised by Parliament. The whole of tho lino has been pretty well determined all the way to Clyde, and tho Public Works Department, which has proceeded with the work .with all dispatch, has rngde every effort in the way of forwarding tho necessary preparations for the construction of those portions of the lino most difficult of execution. In the Warden’s Court, Clyde on the 3rd instant, before W. L Simpson, Esq.,- Warden, John Cole Chappie’s application for a water-race for irrigation purposes m Lauder district, was objected to by Mr George Naylor. The Warden, after hearing evidence pro and con, decided to adjourn his decision until he had visited the ground. The application of Mr J. P. Alloway, for a water-race from the Spring on tho West side of Cromwell-road was adjourned for 14 days, in the meanwhile tho applicant to notify the County Council ot the application.—Application by the same patty for an Agricultural Lease, bn the East side of the Clyde and Cromwell road, was adjourned for one month, awaiting the reports of Road and Railway departments, if tho ground would be required by either Do. partment.—Mr W. Howjohn’s application for an Extended Claim on the West hank of the Molyneux No objection. Granted. The Wellington Chronicle of September the 12th says “ Rip Van Winkle went to sleep, only to wake np again aud find everything changed. Mr Manders, wearied with the fatigues of legislation, indulged in a little nap last night only to discover that a division had taken place on the second reading of the Land Tax Bill, without his illustrious patronymic figuring in one of tho lists. The eagle-eye of Mr Bunny was the first to discover the recumbent form of tho member for Wakitipu hidden away amongst the benches, with a smile on his countenance that betokened dreams of tho fairy scenes of Wakitipu and visions of far off j beauties. With tho exultant joy of a new discovery Mr Runny announced the fact to ! the Speaker, who sternly called Mr Manders to record his vote. But the dose of ; slumber and the visions of his nreams still surrounded the honorable gentleman, who could only murmur, *• 1 give my vote for ■ the Government proposals,” and subsided back upon the soft couch of sleep.” The District Court of the Otago Goldfields at Clyde, was in accordance with proclamation, on Monday last September 3rd, duly opened. sHis Honor, Judge Harvey, presiding. Mr Turton, the Crown Prosecutor, and eighteen, out of a subpcenced jury also were present. The Court having been opened, Mr Turton rose and explained to the Bench that tho only case for hearing was one of assault, and that in consequence ot the flooded state of the Molyneux river (the Clyde bridge having been swept away, as also the wire ropes of the punt at Alexandra) neither the prisoner (who w;as on hail) or prosecutor, or witnesses wore able to be in attendance ; he said the position was one unparalleled. From what ho could understand all tho parties were willing to attend, hut they were unable on account of the flooded state of the river; he would respectfully suggest that the case bo adjourned till October tho 2nd, by when the river might fall, or that the Court he adjourned till the next Court day. William M‘Leod, constable, stationed at Alexandra, stated the only means of of crossing the Molyneux was by means of a boat,' the property of Mr M ‘Kersey, tf Alexandra, but who refused, on the ground of it being unsafe, to cross any* one. His Honor said he did not feel justified in keeping those of the jury who wero in attendance waiting about till Wednesday—ho would therefore adjourn the Court, sine die, those ot tho jury, who wore in attendance, he said would be paid the usual fees on application to the Registrar.
