TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE, —o— *’ (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) Wellington, Sept. 28th, It is proposed to divide the hack country into feu* pastoral Sections of two thousand !ive hundred acres each, the remainder to bo siirveyed in Sections of three hundred and twenty acres, re Moutere. Similar action will he taken in regard to Cargill’s run—a grand experiment, which I believe will be.a successful new step for the interior of Otago. Dunedin, October 3. Sheep assessment—L46,263. ") . The Invercargill from : Glasgow, has arrived, with immigrantss, all well. The Judicial Commission Bill has been rejected by 37t0 27—Macandrew and the Premier strongly supported it, the latter’s speech caused a sensation. The Lords fined Money Robertson 50s for contempt, being absent from the Council without leave. ■ Wellington, October 3rd. A deputation waited on the Minister of Piiblio Works yesterday, to ask for assistance in re-erecting bridges. The deputation consisted, of’ Messrs. Pyko, Bastings, Brown, Green, De Latour, Murray, Mandors, Oliver, Driver, Seaton, and Thompson. The Minister of Public Works expressed sympathy and said ho would consult his colleagues respecting the matter.—No answer yet. Dunedin, October 3rd. A deputation waited on the Minister of Public Works requesting him to bring under the notice of the Government destruction caused by recent floods in destroying foui bridges on the Molyueux. ‘ Mr Maoandrew said that the Roxburgh Bridge did not require immediate consideration not being outho main trunk road. Mr Seaton thought that local government was such a blessing that Mr Pyke should pray to Heaven every morning for it. Counties should bear costs. Mr Pyke said, the town of Alexandra, which was forty feet above the ordinary level of the river, was under water—that could not be attributed to the abolition of Provinces, but was a visitation of Providence. The bridges would cost, at least, L 20.000 for their repair. Mr Brown said it affected the whole of Otago. Mr Oliver said it would be a disgrace to Otago if the bridges were not restored ; and there should he no delay. Mr De Latour said, whilst he opposed Government voting money for local works, and had voted against bridges in his own district on principle, yet he thought the p -esrnt an exceptional case. Mr Macandrew said the Counties should not be exonerated ; but he would bring the matter before the Government. Mr Pyke said that all the Province would be bor.efittcd, and the whole costs should not bo. thrown on the Counties. . Mr Macandrew said ho had no doubt some means would be adopted fpr meeting the difficulty, and Government would give the matter immediate attention. [Our Dunedin correspondent says the following news from Balclutba is just to hand.] Five houses have broken np and aro Carrie 1 down the stream. All gardens and tillage ruined where ffood baa been. Railway station and works much damaged—it will tako about a month to repair them. Many houses in the township are now shaking and likely to go. The Crown Hotel and places in its immediate vicinity are free from the. flood. The river has formed a channel tor itself right across Inch Clutha. Township much injured, and it is impossible to estimate damages. Nearly all The inhabitants have left and aro living on the north side of the town. The floods, so far, have caused the death of three persons. The Southland Times reports the death, by drowning, of Mr W. Lawson, of Iron Bridge ; James Mitohell, engineer in survey of Latteranna Railway, (?) drowned in Upper Waitaka. On Tuesday night, from Balclutha. it is reported that the body of a man was found at Kaitangata.
