The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers, Clyde, on Tuesday evening last, the 3rd inst. Present—S. Welsford, Esq., Mayor, and Crs Clark, Cox, M’Connochic, Auckland, and Waddell.

The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed.

The outward correspondence, including letters to V. Pyke, Esq., asking that ClydeBridge debentures be banded over to this Council for destruction ; to Minister of Public Works re Clyde Bridge toll-house ; to Colonial Secretary re endowment, and asking for 2000 acres on boundary of Vincent County in Ida Valley, was read and adopted.

Inward correspondence including replies from V. Pyke, Esq., to effect that the Government had acceded to request ef Council, and that the County Clerk in whoso hands the debentures were, is ordered to hand them over to the Municip.il authorities for destruction ; from F. J. Wilson, by authority of Minister of Public Works requiring Municipal authorities from interfering with Clyde Bridge- tolbbonse ; from Colonial Secretary re endowment, and expressing regret of the Government that, as the land applied fir is under pastoral lease, and that hitherto the selection of municipal endowments has been confined to lands at the disposal of the Government, therefore the Government, under these circumstances, are unable to comply with request; telegram from V. Pyke, Esq., M.H.R., to the same effect, and advising that a fresh application be made for land over v Inch pastoral lease is cancelled.

The Mayor explained that he had telegraphed in reply to Mr Pyke, to the effect that as there is no land in the district, excepting the Clyde Commonage over which the pastoral lea<-e is cancelled the Borough had no desire to encroach on that for an endowment consequently must decline to wake fresh application. Letter from Jas. Patterson was read, wherein the writer say there is a mistake in the notice of rates paper, and asking that i: he amended. The Town Clerk explained there was 10 mistake. Cr Auckland suggested that ns it was very difficult to make Mr Patterson understand it would bo as well to make the reduction naked for, and proposed accordingly. Cither Councillors said, it being dearly 1 roved there was no mistake they strongly

objected to make any such a bad precedent, and Cr M'Connochie proposed as an amendment—That no alteration be made, and that the full amount be demanded. The amendment was declared carried.

Letter from Executors in the estate of the late Mr George Kenny, asking for remission of rates due, on account of impecuniosifcy of the orphan children, was read. Resolved that the request he complied with. Cr M’Connochie tabled a motion, notice of which he had given at last meeting for the rescinding of a motion previouslylcarried for the removal of Surveyor’s and Police quarters off the line of Coquet street. He explained that when the original motion was carried it was with the view of improving' the south end of the town ; hut when the street lino was laid out it was found that far from being an ■ improvement it would be to the contrary. He would propose—That the motion he rescinded, and that the Government be requested to re-sur-vey Coquet street in accordance with accompanying plan.—Carried. Resolved—That the Public Works Committee and Cr M ‘Connochie be empowered to have the upper part of Coquet street from the bridge road to Cox’s Corner formed and gravelled ; also to. get skylight at Town Hall repaired, and such-other work as they may deem necessary.

The Town Clerk was instructed to lay an information against the Chinese for working within the Town boundary, without the consent of the authorities. The Clyde Bridge Debentures were now destroyed by burning. Accounts amounting to Ll6 Is. 3d. were passed for payment.

The meeting then adjourned till Monday, the 9th instant at 7.30. p.ra.
