CLYDE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening lasi the 6th instant.
Present: —S. Velsford, Esq., Mayorf and Councillors Auckland, Beck, Clark and M’Connochie.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The inward correspondence, including a letter from the Colonial Secretary, to the effect that the merger of the Borough of Clyde into the Vincent County would take effect three months from the 11'h June, if no counter petition, signed by one fourth of the ratepayers in the County, or one fourth of the ratepayers in the Borough was presented to His Excellency the Governor, was read and received.
The Mayor asked if the Council had decided what was to be done in respect to the toll-house at the bridge—he said, it will bo remembered that when it was offered for sale he Lad withdrawn it, not sufficient being offered for it, and that since then a letter had . been received from Mr F. J. Wilson, acting on behalf of tho bodies. Politic and Corporate concerned, ordering the Council to desist from any interference with it as it was included in the sale of the Bridge ; for his part ho did not feel inclined to give way—it was a distinct and expressed understanding during the negotiations for the sale of the Bridge, that the. Toll-house was not a part of the bargain ; the attempt to take the house was a breach of good faith, which ho did not f*)l inclined to submit to, however, ho was in the hands of the Council, and would leave it with them to decide.
Councillors agreed that the Council would occupy anything but a dignified position by giving way, and resolved that the Mayor be requested to act up to tho letter of a resolution, passed at a pterions meeting, empowering him to dispose of the house. The question of transferring the Town Hall and other property of the Borough to tho Library Committee, in trust for the Town of Clyde, was adjourned till the next meeting of the Council. The Mayor asked the Town Clerk if Mr Pyko had handed to him the Bridge Debentures- On being informed in tho negative, it was resolved I That the Town Clerk
write to Mr Pyke at Wellington, and request him to hand tho Bridge Debentures over to tho Corporation to bo destroyed.
Cr. Auckland laid on the table a sketch of the proposed street lino through the Camp Reserve, and asked that the Chief Surveyor of the Province be requested to instruct the District Surveyor to lay off the road lino as proposed. He explained that though there wero properties between the river and the Camp Reserve, there was no road line, and as the proposal would not injure anyone, to the contrary, it would be a benefit. Ho proposed that the matter be attended to. Tho Mayor pointed out that previous resolution of the Council would require to bo rescinded before any action in this matter could be taken.
After discussion, during which tho Council expressed itself in favour of tho propbeod Hue of street, and Cr M'Conaochie gaio a
notice of motion— 11 That at the next mooting of the Council ho would move that resolution referred to bo rescinded.
The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to'LUO 12s 9d, which was agreed to. The Town Clerk was instructed to make out all accounts of monies duo to tho Cor. poration, and press for payment; and to convene a special meeting for Tuesday, the 20th inst., at 7.30 p,m.
The meeting then dissolved with the quaternary vote to. tho chair.
