(from our Correspondent.) Dunedin, June 6th. It has been raining heavily here since Sunday. Floods are anticipated.
A landslip near Blueskin has occurred suspending the traffic on that section. The San Francisco mail arrived at Auckland last night. Mr Donald Reid, M. H. R. for the Taiori, has forwarded the resignation of his seat to the Speaker.
Government has received telegrams to the effect that the Flew Zealand L 3,500,000 loan has been twice floated. It was subscribed for over on the first day, and has been a great success. Government has not yet been made aware of average prices realised, as allotment was not made, but it will be something over par. The loan is negotiated at 5 per cent., with currency of from ten to fifty years at borrower’s option.
Authorized Public Works will now be vigorously proceeded with.
At the last meeting of the Waste Lands Board petitions were read asking for 10,000 acres to bo thrown open on Run 228 (Dalgotty’s), and 2,500 acres on Strode and Fraser’s Run, Dunstan. The Board appointed Messrs Bastings and Green to inspect and report on the land for the Board. It was also agreed to recommend the opening of 10,000 acres on the New Zealand Land Company’s Run, Moonlight Flat, under agricultural lease and deferred payment systems. Applications will bo received at Macraes on July 25th. The Ringarooma s.s. has not arrived yet. She left the Bluff on Monday last. It is supposed that she is detained outside by heavy fogs. The Star’s special telegram, dated London June 4th, says :■ -
The race for the championship of the Thames look place to-day, and was won by Higgins, Elliot being nowhere. It is officially stated that Congress will meet on the 12th inst., and Lord Odo Russell, our Ambassador at St. Petersburgh, will represent England, along with the Premier and the Marquis of Salisbury. The Emperor of Germany remains quiet and foverless. The shots in his wrist have been removed, but those in his face have not yet been extracted I’he Australian Cricketers have beaten the Surrey team by five wickets.
