Wo are informed tiiat two claims have lately been taken up at the junction of the Manuherikia with the Molyneux, and that good payable prospects have been obtained. The river will, however, require to fall considerably' lower than it is at present to allow of them being worked profitably.

Mr Pyke, M.H.R. for tho Dunstan District, announces that ho will address tho Electors, at Alexandra- on Wednesday week, the Ithh inst, on “ The Political Past, Present, and Future.” Irrespective of the great interest that must attach to the utterances of a Member of Parliament just on tho eve of the sitting of Parliament, we feel assured Mr Pyke’s haranaue will bo of a character not alone instructive but edifying, and should command a largo audience. It appears by Auckland): telegrams that Mrs Major Croker has been brought up at the Police Court there on a charge of obtaining goods under false pretences. The evidence- showed that she had written a number of orders to tradesmen for goods received, which were drawn on Mr Thorne, solicitor, to be paid off “ first funds.” In cross-examination, Mr Thorne deposed that Mrs Croker had known since February she was entitled to LI 100. He did not know that Miss Long, before leaving Auckland, repudiated the deed the morning after executing it, and had gone Home to oppose it. though he heard so very recently. Even if he had been told at the time he had not thought much about it in the face of a good deed, executed by a firm like Whitaker and Russell. He did not know that Messrs WMtaker and Russell thought Miss Long had good reasons for repudiating the deed He told Mrs Croker she might expect the money any time after the inward February mail. The sum in his hands at present was scarcely worth mentioning, and he had a lien on it for costs. The accused was committed for trial.
