The Dunstan Times.

FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 1878.

Beneath the rule of men entir>~ly just the pen is mightier than the fcSWORD.

At Alexandra, on Saturday eve—ning last a meeting of gentlemen was held £~or the purpose of appointing a Committees to select areas of land on the Moutere an ■ ~ Calloway Runs, and afterwards memo zxialize the Waste Lauds Board to throw sar—no open for settlement. The exact result of the meeting we do not know,, but, so fair- as we can learn it was decided before any eHefinite action be taken that other portions of the district be consulted. The desire -£~or land in this, as in every other part of country, is being now very loudly expres-sed. Ever since the district was settled, amd that is now some fifteen years, only one block has been thrown open in the Alexa-ndra, and one in the Clyde divisions of tlxo Dunstan District, neither the runholders nor the Waste Lands Board can therefore well refuse any reasonable demand. Prom the report of the last meeting of the Waste Lisauls Board the petition for a block of land -on Earnscleugh Run was referred to Mess ts Bastings and Green to inspect and repor-S. Whilst these gentlemen are in the distrs_ct, it will be as well for them to kill two turds with the one stone, we accordingly suggest that they be called upon to inspect tine Moutere and Galloway Runs. In the brands of gentlemen like Messrs Bastings and Green, the district is sure ot getting justice, but at the saipe time we do not believe in this system of inspecting, If a man, or uimx'tr of men who have boon long time resident in the district select an area ot laud tfcney should be better judges as to wdiether it is good or bad, than any men who merely jg»ay a cursory visit. Whether they arc, o t are not is, however, not to the question, "Shcy make their selection and are willing to take it like they do their wives “ for better or worse,” and we do not see w Tiy anyone should offer an impediment
