MUNICIPALITY OF CLYDE.
The Ordinary Monthly Meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday evening last. Present: —Mr S. Welsford, Mayor, and Councillors Clark, Beck, Auckland and , Waidell. Minutes of previous meetings wore read and confirmed. Inward correspondence, comprising letters from the Clyde Quadrille Assembly, asking the use of the Town Hall every Wednesday evening during the months of May, June and July, and from the Chairman of the Vincent County, asking the Town Council to join with the other Municipalities and the County in taking upon themselves the maintenance and control of the Cromwell and Duustan District Hospitals, were rea l and received. The outward correspondence was read and adopted. Kesolved—That the request of the Quadrille Club be granted. The letter from the Chairman of Vincent County was again read—the following are the proposals made therein Ist—That the County Council undertake the control and maintenance of the Clyde and Cromwell Hospitals in accordance with teripa of the Colonial Secretary’s letter 2nd— That the existing Committees continue to collect subscriptions, and manage the said Hospitals as at present. 3rd—That in the event of any deficit accruing over and above the amount of voluntary subscriptions and the Subsidies granted by the Government thereon, the sum required for liquidating such deficit shall be contributed pro rata by the County and Boroughs in equal proportions to the values of rateable properties (as shewn by the next previous Valuation of such properties) in the said County and Boroughs. After discussion it was resolved—That this Council agree to the proposals contained in the letter from the Chairman of Vincent County as to the maintenance and control of tne Hospitals. Cr Beck drew attention to the fact of portions of the Police quarters and Survey Offices being on Coquet-street, and said he believed the Survey Department contemplated building new Offices on the site of the present buildings, if that were done the street would bo blocked up, and great inconvenience result to the owners of property adjoining, as also to the general public, as the street leads to the Parsonage, the School and the Hospital. . He did not see that thoSurvey Department would be incommoded if they erected their Offices on the opposite side of the street. The street was not now well defined, and as nothing could be done to it with a building abutting on it, he would propose that the Police and Survey Departments be requested to remove their buildings off the street line to ■enable the Council to form and niake the said street.—Carried. Proposed by Cr Clark, seconded by Cr Waddell—That a rate of one shilling in the £ be struck for the year ending 31st March, 1879, and the same he made payable in one sum on the 30th day of Juno, 1878. Cr Auckland objected to a shilling rate ; he said such heavy taxes were not required now that the Bridge was taken off their hands, Crs Clark and Beck explained that a lesser rate would not enable the Council to carry out the works contemplated, Cr Auckland—such being the case, he would withdrrw Ills opposition. The motion was carried. The Public Works’ Committee wore instructed to obtain estimates of co“t of repairing the Town Hall ; also, to have the road leading to the Bridge put in order. Cr Clark informed the Connell that the LSOOO had been receive 1 from the Government for the purchase of the Clyde bridge, and that it would be requisite to have draft for Balance prepared by Friday. Cr Waddell was elected Member of the Finance Committee. Accounts amounting to L 435 8 8 were passed for payment. The meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.
