CENSUS STATISTICS.

By the courtesy of W. L. Simpson, Esq., census enumerator, we are enabled to give tlie following interesting particulars of the County of Vincent Population. Total population in the County, 3937, inclusive of 570 Chinese. Sub-Divisions. Hawea Riding : 739 males, 424 females ; total 1163—inclusive of 424 in tho Town of Ciornwel). Kawarau Riding : 420 males, 163 females ; total 583. Nevis Riding : 269 males, 40 females ; total 309. Matakanui Riding: 487 males, 338 females ; total 825 - inclusive of 313 in the Town of Clyde. Manuherikia Riding : 553 males, 267 females—total 820, inclusive of 200 in the Town of Alexandra. Earnscieugh Biding: 163 males, 74 females ; total 237. Agricultural Statistics. Total area of land under cultivation, including grasses, 5867 acres, of which 470 acres are in wheat, which are estimated to yield 10,874 bushels ; and 2,558 acres in oats, estimated to yield 73,414 bushels. Sub-Divisions. Hawea Riding : Total acreage under crop, including grasses, 1145 acres—in oats for grain, 5.34 acres, estimated yield, 15,504; m wheat, 52 acres, estimated yield 1610. Kawarau Riding : Total acreage under crop 107 acres ; oats and wheat, none. Matakanui Riding: Total acreage, 1348 acres—in oats for grain, 1212 acres, estimated yield 14630 bushe's; in wheat, 141 acres, estimated yield 3179 bushels. Manuherikia Riding : Total acreage, 2318 acres -in oats for grain 1212 acres, estimated yield 34720 bushels—in wheat 257 acres, estimated yield 5425 bushels Nevis Riding : total area under crop, 32 acres. Oats and wheat none. Earnsoleugh Riding : Total acreage, 1348 acres, in oats for gram 203 acres, estimated yield 8150 bushels—in wheat 20 acres, estimated yield 660 bushels. Total quantity of last year’s crop in hand at date of taking’cenbus, viz., 3rd March, 1878, 870 bushels of oats. The above figures at tbe present time are tho more particularly interesting in as much as they will be of great assistance to the Vincent Countv Council in their deliberations on the question of redistributing tbe ridings in the County. It has been assumed that the northern division of the County had the largest population, the above figures, however, shew that the assumption was based on wrong grounds. The agricultural statistics must be most pleasing, as they shew a far clilTorent state of things than could have been anticipated. The average yield is very low, being only 23 bushels to the acre of wheat, ami 28 of oats, but low and all as they are they represent the very handsome total of L 12.000 at 4s per bushel for wheat and 2s 6d for oats. This sum, added to the revenue from hay and grasses and other crops from the remaining 2839 acres, will bring up the total to very respectable figures.
