Thinking that Mr Gaylord's own letter, in another column, sufficiently explains everything that requires explanation we do not publish “ Fair Play ” on the same subject ; and further, wo do not see that any reference to the holder of the Cromwell Civic Chair is called for, failing to discover what real or mock turtle has to do with n Veterinary Surgeon’s bill of charges. tAn exchange states that the Emperor of ' China has lately issued an edict prohibiting opium smoking throughout the country, particularly among officials, scholars, and soldiery. The lights and shades of Mr G. E. Barton’s character arc thus pourtrayed by a Wellington correspondent of the Hawke’s Bay Herald :—“ Mr Barton is a member of the Club; a jovial pleasant man in company ; plays dance music on the piano at evening parties, and at dinners and dance* is always as merry as a grig. Ho tells lots of good Irish stories, and is always brimming with Irish vivacity. Ho is about 45 years of age ; a small man, with iron-grey hair and heard, but active and full of spirits. On the other hand, he is a most irascible, hot-headed, tempestuous old gentleman, In Melbourne he was a 1 way a quarrelling with someone, and as he had no professional income. was obliged to visit Dunedin. There ho was incessantly quarrelling with the Judges and magistrates, and was known as a most cantankerous person. In short, his whole life has been or.o unceasing strife Ho is always fancying that he is being snubbed and sat upon by someone, and in consequence is always boiling over with rage.” Advice to Mother? !- Are you broken in your rest by a sick child suffering with tho pain of catting teeth ?
