The Dunstan Times.

FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 1878.

Beneath the rule of vien entirely just the pen ie mightier than (/ifswui).

At the last meeting of the Vincent County Council a letter was read from the owners of the Alexandra Punt (which is the only means of crossing tho Molyneux on tho main road between Roxburgh and Alexandra) offering on receipt of an annual subsidy of L3BS for three years to work the punt free of all tolls. The Council, after deliberation, agreed to give the amount for one year. The amended offer, wo are given officially to understand, has been accepted, and that free traffic will commence from Monday, the 25th instant. At the same meeting an offer made by the Clyde Municipality to throw open the Clyde Bridge to free traffic was also accepted. The day on which the toll from this structure will be removed is not yet fixed upon ; there is very little doubt however that no very long time will be allowed to lapse before this great boon will be conferred on the travelling public. A ■sort of demonstration will be made on boldroccasions, and we hope tho residents in the district will muster strong on the occasions and show by their presence that they appreciate the boon. At .first blush the removal of these tolls may appear but a very small benefit, but upon consideration it will prove not so slight. At the very lowest computation the annual receipts at both these crossings could not have been much less than LBOO. Accordingly agreeing with the old maxim that a penny saved is a penny earned, it may be said that the district will henceforth be earning LBOO a year more than it would under the old order of things. For this blessing—as blessing it may be well termed, the County system may he credited, and those who ever doubted the benefits to be had under it must now admit their error.
