(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) Dunedin, March 7, 1878. The Hou. Mr Maoandrew reached hero last night, hut makes a short stay. Sir George Grey arrives to-morrow, and addresses a public meeting at the theatre in the evening. The banquet to J, C. Brown is to take place on Monday. The Ministerial party will attend. It is arranged that Larnach should resign his portfolio and seat before leaving Auckland by the mail steamer. It is assumed the resignation of portfolio has been posted. Resignation of his seat in the House he placed in the hands rf a friend, who will exercise his discretion as to when it shall be sent to the Speaker. It is understood C. S. Reeves will contest Larnach’s scat in the Ministerial interest. Alexander Reid, journalist, formerly editor of the New Zealand Times, and lately on the staff of the Christchurch Press, disappeared mysteriously from off the steamer Taupu last night, or her way from Lyttleton to Wellington. He was last seen at 0 p.m., looking over the bulwarks. Ho appeared to be in low spirits, and was talking to himself. Half an hour later ho had disappeared and it is feared ho committed suicide. Reynolds has forwarded his resignation to (he Speaker. Judge Williams has decided the price of all deferred payment lands must be L 3 per acre, London, March 4. The Secretary for war in presenting the army estimates said the army is in excellent condition. The regulars number 110,000 men, and the auxiliary force 400,000. A special to the Star, dated Melbourne, March 5, says the crisis is ended. The Legislative Council have passed the Payment of Members Bill, and Berry withdraws vote from the Appropriation Bill. The compromise was announced in both Houses this afternoon. Sydney, March 6. Lunatic Creswell has been identified as Arthur Orton. He is to be sent to England. Melbourne, March 6. The Victorian compromise has been broken and it is war to the knife between the two Houses. The Assembly completely ignores the Council. Goldie makes grave charges against Captain Ellangowan, of the mission steam er, of neglecting the besieged mission station. The Rev. Mr Macfarline is blamed.
