DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL.

- o The usual monthly meeting ol the Committee of Management was held in the Com-mittee-room, Clyde, on Monday evening last, the 11th instant Present—B. Naylor, Esq. (President), \V. L. Simpson, Esq. (Vice-President), Rev. J Dewe, and Messrs Attfield, Beck, Cambridge, Holt, J. E. Stevens (Treasurer), and G. Facbe (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence, including a letter to the Agent of the Bank of New South Wales, in reference to a charge made against members of the Committee for payment of cheques into the Hospital account not drawn in favor of the Institution and thus evading the. customary exchange, and asking for an explanation, was read and adopted. The inward correspondence, including a a reply to the effect that the charge as made iu former letter was against the Collector, who had indulged in the practice for a long time, citing a representative case where two cheques of L2 6s. and L2 respectively, were so paid in, and concluding by saying that it rested with the Collector to explain the circumstances that entitled him to do so, was read and received. Mr Fache, the Collector, in explanation, denied that an such practice was indulged in, but that as it frequently occurred he received monies in tho ordinary course of his business including Hospital besides his own, that he placed such cheques to his own account, thus relieving the Institution of tho obligation, and that occasionally, as in the case referred to, he, as a quid pro guo, passed cheques of his own without payment of exchange to tho Hospital account. Ho distinctly and definitely' denied that it was done with tho view of evading tho payment of exchange. Mr W. L. Simpson said he was of opinion that tho explanation was acorrect one, and absolved Mr Fache from the charge of dishonesty imputed, but thought it would be as well if the system was not adhered to. He would propose, “That the Committee do not endorse Mr Denninton’s views in thinking that Mr Fache passed cheques as stated by him with a dishonest intent to avoid paying exchange as a private individual, but that tho Committee think tho practice of passing any other cheques but those directly belonging to the Hospital ought to bo avoided.” Seconded by Mr Holt and carried. The Visiting Committee’s report, recommending payment of accounts for salaries and supplies for the mouth of January, 1378, amouutisg to L 53 Ms, was read and adopted.
