VINCENT COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special meeting of tho Council was hell in the County Chambers, Clyde, on Wednesday, the 19th instant, at noon. Present—Vincent Pyko, Esq., Chairman, and Councillors Fraser, Pitches, and 00lClough. Applications for tho office of valuator were opened and read. After discussion, it being the most competent and not the cheapest should be the principle upon which Valuators should be selected, the following appointments were made ;-*-M r Dickie and Mr Beck, Mntakanui, Manuherikia, Karnscleugh, and Havrea ridings, LOO; F. Lyons, Kawarau and Nevis ridings, L 35.

The Council how resolved itself into Committee of tho whole, for the consideration of the following questions Offer of Mr J. Drummy to give up his contract for erection of a foot bridge across the Manuherikia at Alexandra ; letter from Messrs M'Connochie and Tohill, asking the Council to reconsider their decision in the matter of determining contract No. 1, Muddy Creek •; application of Mr Drummy for extension of time for Completing contracts for the building of the bridges across the Pool Burn and Tinker’s Gully Sludge Channel; and reports of the Engineer on the Muddy Creek road, and tho road from Matakanui to Lander Creek.

On resuming, the following report was read—That the offer ot Air Drummy be accepted, and that tenders he called for the construction of a traffic bridge across the Manuherikia at Alexandra. That the letter from Messrs M'Connochie and Tohill stand over till next ordinary meeting.—That the request of Mr Drummy be not complied with. [Over this letter the generally expressed opinion of the Council was that unless some very special causes were assigned, that it would be manifestly unfair to other tenderers to extend the time of any contract, as where the time to complete a work was short tho contract price was regulated accordingly.]— That the reparts of the Engineer stand over till next meeting.

Resolved—That the report be adopted, and that effect be given to the recommendations therein contained. The Chairman here stated that he had arranged with the Government, who hail agreed to give one-third of purchase of the Kawarau Bridge provided cost did not exceed L6OOO. The letter containing this proposition] had not as yet reached him, consequently the Council could not take any action thereon, but it would be as well between this and the next meeting for individual members of the Council to decide what steps should be taken in the matter. Mr Pyke also said that he had had placed on the estimates L3OO for a foot bridge across the Nevis. The Council then closed.
