CLYDE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

—o— The usual monthly meeting was held in the Council Chamber on Tuesday evening last the 4th instant. Present—Mr S. Welsford, Mayor, and Councillors Auckland, Beck, Clark, Cox, Feraud, and M'Connochie. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Correspondence, including memo from W. L. Simpson, Esq., Warden, asking for actuaries of Council on a letter enclosed, and which was one from Mr J. D. Foraud, complaining to the Warden that the Corporation water-race had not been in use for one month, and that it was out of repair, and asking that if the existing state of things were not remedied, that certificate be cancelled, and that two heads of water bo turned down its natural channel ; also, a Telegram to the Commissioner of Police, Dunedin, from the Council, in its capacity as Board of Health, re the transferring of Constable M'Loughlin from Lawrence to Clyde, and reply, were read and received. The telegram to the Commissioner of Police was to the effect—“ That hearing that Constable M’Loughlin, of Lawrence, in whose family scarlet fever had lately been, was ordered for Clyde, and asking that the order be countermanded, as the family might introduce the fever to Clyde. The reply was— “That Constable M'Loughlin’s family had not had the fever since August last, and that there was no fear.”

Tenders for leasing the Corpoiationwater race were now opened. M’Nally and party--L3O per annum, conditionally that the Corporation deliver water into their race. J. Holt, L 25 per annum, conditionally that he bo allowed to divert the same into his race.

Resolved after discussion, during waich Cr. Feraud explained the reason of his writing to the Warden, was, so that the right should bo maintained, and not suffered to lapse for want of attention—That the offer of Mr Holt be accepted, conditionally that he obtain rights to divert the water from the Corporation race, and also pay costs of agreement, &c.

Cr, Clark, in support of the resolution said, though the offer was L 5 the lowest, he felt convinced the Corporation in the long tun would bo the gainers, as Mr Holt was bound in ■ protecting his own interest to protect the Coiporation’s as well.

Cr. Formul moved as an amendment— That in acceptin'' V r Holt’s offer to rent the Corporation water-right, the water-race, the propel ty of the Corporation be used, in lieu of allowing the lessee to divert the said water in a different channel than the one belonging to the Corporation in accordance with the water-race certilicate. Hot seconded.

The Town Clerk was instructed to prepare statement of rates due for the years 1875 to 1877, and lay the same on the table at the next meeting.

Resolved—That the Public Works’ Committee be empowered to get a gate for, and other necessary works at the Bridge. Resolved—That a one shilling rate be struck for the period ending 31st March, 1878. The Town Clerk was instructed to get rate book, and to give due notice of making the rate. Resolved—That applications be invited for the Office of Valuator. Accounts amounting to LIG 18s. wore passed for payment. The meeting then dissolved.
