TURKO-RUSSIAN WAR.
(By Cable.) (From our Dunedin Exchanges.) Bombay, September 25. Rains in Bulgaria are retarding operations. An unofficial report states that the Russian centre, on the 25th, attacked Plevna and were defeated with very heavy loss. The Russians were compelled to fall hack south of Jogdgi. London, ‘‘eptemher 28. The Daily News and another special correspondent's report that great discontent and discouragement prevail at the Russian headquarters, and that Russian snocm is regarded as hopeless unless a change is made in the personnel of the staff. Siege operations at, Plevna are at a standstill for the want of shovels. A severe battle, lasting nine hours, has taken puice in Asiatic Turkov between the Russian forces (under General Tergukosoff) and theTTurkishforces (under Ismail Pasha) with indecisive r< suits.
Chefket Pasha is entrenched before Orchamo. The President has informed the Hungarian Parliament that the triple alliance involved Hungary in ah obligation regarding the Eastern question. Bombay, September 25. The Piussian Roumanian loss before Plevnais’2l,ooo, not 27,000, as previously stated. September 28. Austria continues her neutrality. Mehmnet Ali retired to Caralom, owing to missing the Russians on the Lorn. Bad weather makes supplies difficult, the roads being impassable. Sulieman Pasha co-operates with Mohemet Ali in attacking Biela in pursuance of the orders of the Seraskerat. September 29. There are signs of an early and severe winter, there being two inches of snow in the Shipka Pass. It is believed the campaign in Bulgaria is virtually ended. The Russians will remain entrenched dining the winter. October 2. It is semi-officially stated that Russia refuses to entertain peace proposals. Regular siege works are'carried on at Plevna. Fifty-thousand Imperial Guards occupied Popokoi. A Russian official report says General Turgukesnff defeated Ismail on the 27th September, with great loss. Mukbtar reports the Russions have been completely defeated, and have crossed Ka:a River. October 3. Mukbtar Pasha gained a complete victory at Ned Juni. The Russians were driven beyond the frontier. The bombarding eastward of Plevna continues.
