POLICE v. McINTOSH.
(TO THE EDITOR OF THE DUNSTAN TIMES.) Sir, —It is to be regretted that the correspondent of the Cromwell Argus at Blacks should aot be more accurate when he ventures to give a report of cases. An untrue report, no matter how unintentionally written, is not only worthless as a record hut may have a mischievous and prejudicial tendency. The facts of the case pretended to be reported were l —Mclntosh was ■charged with permitting playing at dice in his licensed house. Mclntosh readily admitted that dice were played, but against his expressed request, and that the dice belonged not to him hut to aMr Edmonds. The witness “ Garrick,” called by the Police, corroborated Mclntosh’s statement as to his protest, and that the defendant was standing during tho whole time at the door of his hotel. The prosecuting Constable saw dice being thrown openly at the counter, and went in and took them. Edmonds was called for the defence, and said he did throw the dice ; that Mclntosh told him not to do it as he never permitted such to be done in his house, and that lie never kept dice; and the witness further stated that the dice were his property, having purchased them on that day from Mr Pitches, storekeeper at Blacks, and claimed their return, which was ■ot course granted. Ou that evidence the ease “ not being proved " was dismissed. - Tours, etc., One Who was Present in Court. Blacks, September 12th, 1877.
