TURKO-RUSSIAN WAR.
(By Cable.) (Feom Dunedin Dailies.) Bombae, August 2. The Russians, reinforced, are advancing from Ardahan. The advance guard is near PeUnck. The defeat of the Russians at Plevna is admitted, and the Turkish forces are acting on the defensive. Their loss, relatively, is small. Singapore, August 3. There has been desperate fighting for two days at Plevna. Tho Russians wore completely defeated, with a loss of 8000 killed and 24,000 wounded. Austria is partially mobilising. London, August 3. The Herald’s special telegrain says that the Russian attack carried tho first and second lines of the Turkish position, but (hey were subsequently driven back by the deadly fire of the Turkish infantry. The Turks then advanced and re-captured all their positions, slaughtering enormous numbers of Russians. The Russian force consisted of five divisions of infantry, three brigades of cavalry, and IGO guns. Tho defeat imperils the Russian position at Tverna. On the South of the Balkans tho Russians encountered the Turkish force under Sulieman Bey and Rodif Pasha at Eski Saghra on Tuesday, and were repulsed, losing several guns. Wellington, August 4. The following is the Agent General’s telegram : London, August 2. The Turks repulsed tho Russians at Plevna with great slaughter. Osman Pasha, the new Commander-in-Chief, with the main army, and Mehcmot Ali, with the Turkish forces that have been protecting the Danuhian fortresses, are trying; to effect a junction. A great battle is exported hourly near Tirnova. Tho Russians are making groat efforts, as a further defeat would destroy their communications with General Gonrko south of the Balkans, and his force there would probably be destroyed, and the campaign concluded against Russia.
