WASTE LAND BOARD.
At tho usual weekly meeting of the Waste Lands Board held on the Ist instant, the following business of local interest was transacted:— t.-’• A letter was read'from Mr Woodhouse concerning his request for a lease undo l }- section 54 of tiic Waste Lands Act, considered bythe Board on July 25. The applicant stated that he had spent over L 250 in improvements on the land. The matter was referred to the District Land Officer to report Oft. Mr John Beighton, as Mayor of Roxburgh, applied that sections 8, 9, and 10, block X, Toviot district, might he reserved from application for agricultural leasing, on the ground that they embrace the only available track from Roxburgh to the diggings and commonage behind. The Board'decided to adhere to its former decision. The application of John Butler to exchange his agricultural for defeircd payment leases— sections 34 and 35, Mock 1, Cairn Hill, was approved. Mr M‘Cormack asked to purchase one acre ‘of land adjoining the Kawarau bridge, to secure improvements made by him. The District Officer recommended that the land should be leased to 'the applicant.—Tho Board resolved to give Mr M ‘Cormack a license to occupy under thfc 161st section of the Act. Messrs Murray, Roberts, 'and Co., applied for a license under the 169 th section of the Waste Land Act, 1872, to occupy 200 acres on Run 213n, for forest tree planting. The Nasohy District Officer reported that there was no objection to the application, which was granted, the Chairman remarking that at present the district was a very treeless one. The Board considered a telegram from the District Laud Officer at Arrow inTewarci to action being taken fur tke recovery of rents on the Wakatip runs, also a return showing rents due. The Chairman 'There is about LOOCO still owing for rents. Thequestion is whether authority should be given for proceedings being taken up there for the recovery of them. It should be gone about with prudence, to see whether they have powder and shot before we go into the expense. The fact is that they have all found the rents too ‘high, and a lot of them will not pay. Referred to the Chief Commissioner, with power to take legai proceedings.
