The Dunstan Times Beneath the rule of men ENTIRELY JUST the PEN is MIGHTIER than the SWORD. FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 1877.

Mr Pyke, will, it is anticipated, leave for Wellington, on Monday next, the 6th inst. Wo would draw tlic attention of our readers to the alteration in the times of departure of mails as given in our postal notice. Mr George Pachc notifies having sold the freehold property, in Clyde, adjoining the Town Hall, on Tuesday last, realising for same a level LIOO. Mr George Clark being the purchaser. The Commission (W. Ij. Simpson, Esq., I?.hi. and Warden for thoDunstan District) appointed by His Excellency the Governor to inquire into the objections to a petition made for the construction of the ridings of Hawea and K»warau into a separate County will sit In the ‘Court-house, Cromwell at 11 a.m. to-morrow (Saturday), the 4th instant. Another change has taken place regarding the arrival and departure of the coaches via Lawrence and Queenstown. The time of departure from Clyde for Lawrence and Dunedin is advertised for 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. From Clyde for Queenstown, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at II a.m.

The usual monthly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Dunstau Dia- ! trioti Hospital will take place on on Monday : first, the Gth instant. Besides the ordinary business of receiving reports, paying accounts, &c., the meeting will bo asked to express an opinion on the Bill now before the House of Eopreaontativos for the management of. Charitable Institutions, a copy of which will be laid on the table. ,' , : On the 20th instant, for the vacant seat of Councillor for the Hawea Biding, Vincent County, the following gentlemen were nominated i—John Marsh, David Anderson Jolly, and Ignatius Loughhan. The poll will bo taken this day (Friday). The polling places are Kawarau Gorge, Lowbum i Creek, Bendigo, and Newcastle. Rumor has it there will be a hard run between Messrs Loughnan and Jolly for the 1 seat. In our last week’s issue we were congratulating the miners on the fineness of the weather allowing them to work continuously ; since then we hear that in nearly every part of the district they have had to submit to an enforced idleness, (firewater supply not only being frozen up, but the ground itself being too hard. The farmers, also, are all idle, the Dost stopping-all outdoor work. In the Legislative Council Colonel Brett, in speaking to the Address in Reply, said that he was surprised that no mention was made in his Excellency’s speech of the war now occupying the attention of Europe. He reminded members that when last year he prophesied war he had bean sneered at '; but they had found him a true prophet. He now defied England to keep out of the conflict, seeing that her Queen was Empress over 45,000,000 Mussulmans. The Hon. Dr Pollen, while admitting that Colonel Brett had been a true prophet as to the war now raging, did not consider that England was likely to be drawn into the Russo-Tur-kish war.—Evening Star. On Wednesday evening last the usual! weekly Quadrille Assembly took place. The attendance was not so numerous as usual, which may be attributed to the inclemency of the weather. Those that were presnt ■ appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. We would urge upon members the necessity • of being somewhat punctual as to the hour of commencing the dance, viz.—S o’clock. A Committee appointed by the Grey County Council to draw up suggestions for the amendment of existing Gold Regulations agreed by a majority of one to suggest the gold duty should remain as at present. The counter proposition was to recommend the duty be increased to 2s Bd per ounce, and the miner’s right to be reduced to 10s, aui made available over the whole of the Middle Island. In papers by the Suez mail the Grand Duke Nicholas is credited with having said to a foreign consul; —“ Neither Prince Bismarck nor Lord Derby will prevent the Russian array from entering Constantinople. As the Germans did at Paris, we also shall enter Constantinople—only to leave'it •again.” Mr Trestrail, the well-known importer of horses, who was a passenger by the Ringaroom?, from Melbourne, has brought over the smallest entire pony ever landed in the Colony The little creature is six years old, and stands only 32 inches high. It is said to be extremely docile, and has been broken both for riding and driving. Milton is now supplied with Dunedin made bread at 7id the 41b leaf. The local bakers-stick ■out for 9d. Montenegro has only 190,000 inhabitants with an annual revenue of L 3,000, but it has 20,000 soldiets—in other words, all the able-bodied men are under arms. In our report of the Vincent County Council meeting, published in oar last week’s issue, we omitted an instruction given to the Collector of rates, and as it particularly affects a certain number of County residents, we now fill up the gap. The instruction was—“ That the Rate Collector take immediate proceedings against all defaulting ratepayers. The Daily Times in leading remarks on railway communication says Wo have no doubt whatever that the route chosen will he that up the Strath-Taieri, and over the M aniototo Plains, by the shortest route to Clyde and Cromwell. It will some day be extended to the Lakes and the West Coast, but that is a scheme that must sleep for a while. Now, we think this is a lino which has a fair claim to he constructed at le.vt partly out of the loan, as while it serves the purposes of a branch, it forms part of a main • line of arterial communication. The Chicago Minstrels, a troupe af eight talented and clever men in their particular , line of business, notify by advertisement that on their return trip from the Lakes, en route for Blacks, St Bathan’s and Nasehy, they will play in the Town Hall, Clyde on Tuesday next the 7th instant, and at Alexandra on -the following day, Wednesday, the Bth instant. During their trip up country, they have been most warmly greeted, and are spoken very highly of. We can only say to those who can enjoy a good song and -chorus, nigger break-downs, or laughter provoking farces, do not loose the opportunity when it presents itself, as it but seldom occurs in this part of the j world. We are requested to state that they will appear at Blacks on Thursday next the 9th instant, and at St Bathau’s on Friday the 10th instant. Valca'di.e Discovery for tire Hair.— If your hair is turning grey or white, or falling off, use the Mexican Hair Eenewer,” for it will positively restore hi every case Orey or While, hair to its original color, without leaving the disagreeable smell of most “ Restorers.” It makes the hair charmingly beautiful, as well as promoting the growth of the hair on bald spots, where the glands are not decayed. A Chinaman in Otago not long ago, who had previously failed to succeed in hid own name in obtaining contracts in his neighborhood, hit upon the happy thought'of'calling himself Macpherson, and under this ruse ti became the successful tenderer for a con- hj siderable work, and it has been suggested fi that in the County ot Grey every tenderer I should bear a Milesian patronymic. In a t certain roadside in* on the Grey Valley t road, two persons were seated the other I day. Says D. to P., “How was it you c didn't get that contract ?" P. couldn’t tell; 1 it was said his tender was informal, but ho ( did not know how, for he sent his cheque ( all right for the deposit. “ Whoso name t did .you put to that cheque t" asked D. * “My own, of course," replied P. “ What 1 a fool you were; why didn’t you sign it 1 Paddy Murphy or Mike Flanaghan. It < would have been all right then,” said D. ’ —Grey River Argus. I TheJConcert and Ball given under the * auspices of the Lodge of Good Templars, ! Alexandra, on Friday evening last, in aid of the District School was a most successful ! affair, and gave satisfaction. ] The Concert was admitted on all sides to have been’the’best ever given in Alexandra, ' not that the singers surpassed themselves on , this special occasion, but that the new ] Town Hall, used for the first time for a concert, gave greater scope to the voices, j and enabled them to be heard with better ■ effect. The concert at an end, the room was . cleared for the votaries of terpsichore, who, . to the number of some sixty or seventy, soon claimed the floor, and to the strains of the Alexandra Brass Band, danced right merrily till nearly two o’clock in the morn- , ing, when all departed to their respective homes. The occasion being the second one in the same week at which the Brass Band attended, a word of praise will not be out of place, we therefore, with great pleasure, accord them every credit, not only for being able to play for the various dances but for their willingness in .'attending. We have to acknowledge the receipt of the first batch of parliamentary papers for the present session, including a number of reports and returns on Immigration, State . Forests, and other subjects ; also Bills for consolidating and amending the lands relating to goldfields, to be called the Miners Act; for the provision and incorporation of charitable institutions ; relating to the impounding of cattle, &c. The “ Charitable Institutions Act” provides for the iccor- , porating ot existing charitable institutions under the Act; provides for the election of nine managers, who shall elect from their number President, Vice President and Treasurer ; empowers managers to make bye-laws and rules for the management of the institution ; gives the Governor power to appoint an Inspector of each institution, who ‘shall at least once in a year inspect and report to the Governor. Clause 25 deals with the Subsidy, while clause 27 and following ones throws the liability on to the near relatives of any person maintained in or who is in receipt of out-door relief who are unable to maintain themselves. This j act is one worthy the deep and earnest consideration of the Committees of existing institutions, A public meeting is convened forto-morrow "■(Saturday) eveiifng, the 4th inst., to be held in the Town Hall, Alexandra, for the | : purpose of considering the advisability or otherwise of constructing a traffic bridge across the MaUuherikia, on the boundary ot the Alexandra Corporation, instead of a foot or pack bridge, as agreed upon by the County Council and the Alexandra Town Council. As the question to be discussed is one of Considerable importance we shall hope to see a largo attendance, and to hear a distinct and definite expression of opinion as to whether the amount of traffic between the north and south banks of the ManuheriIda will warrant the extra expenditure between the two classes of structures. 1 That a pack bridge is a necessity we have ever held, but as to whether, to acaooommdate a few people, it is advisable to incur several hundreds of pounds is a question we do not feel called upon, or even . competent, to -express an opinion, we therefore leave that an open question for the meeting to decide. We would suggest, it the traffic is such at the present, or likely 1 to be within the next ten years to warrant the expenditure by all means expend it, but ; if not, let the Pack bridge suffice, and spend the extra money in other works, if perhaps further from home, which may require more immediate attention. Throat Affections and Hoarseness. All suffering from irritation of tho throat , and hoarseness will lie agreeably surprised at the almost immediate relief afforded by tho use of “Brown’s Bronchial Troches.” These famous “ lozenges” are now sold by , most respectable chemists in this country , at Is l(d per box.
