CUT IT IN HALVES.
A somewhat remarkable episode is repnrtd as having occurred at the recent Huntingdonshire Assizes. A man was convinoted of stealing 14s worth of clover hay, and the Judge (Lord Justice Brett) sentenced him to a month’s imprisonment, thereupon a juryman exclaimed—“ That is rather stiff, my Lord.” “Do you think so, gentlemen ?” replied the Judge. The Jury after consulting together, replied that they did think so, and the Judge then asked what sentence they would suggest. “Cut it in halves, My Lord,” said a Solomon iu the jury box. “ Very well,” said the Judge, “itwas your verdict and it shall be your sentence. Let ; tbe prisoner 'be brought back.” This having been done, the Judge said to him, “The Jury thought fa month was too stiff; take fourteen days.” The prisorier must have felt greatly indebted to the sympathy Of the Jury, and the nonchalance of the Judge, who is noted for his severe sentences.
