As was only to be expected, just on the eve of the sitting of Parliament, the question of railway extension is exercising the minds of all people throughout the Colony. The questions that affect us most are those raised by the residents of Oamaru, Naseby, Palmerston, and Tapanui. Oamaru agitates for a line up the Waitaki and across the range to Kyebum as being the one best suited to open up the country. Naseby wants the same terminus, but asks for the lino via Outram. Palmerston requires the deviation from its own door with its terminus at Clyde, while Tapanui wants a branch line. Now, any one or all of these lines there is no doubt would be very useful, but the question arises with us would any one or all of them, if constructed, be of the same public utility as if the line were constructed from Lawrence direct to the Beaumont, and thence up the Valley of ithe Molyneux. We answer, most emphatically, no ! and we must urge upon the centres of population along this route the necessity of immediate action. The line we propose would open up more country available for settlement, and more directly benefit a larger number of people already settled by bringing them within an easy stage of the sea board than would either of the others. Beaumont, Roxburgh, Alexandra, Clyde, Blacks and Cromwell, all alike would benefit, therefore it should receive their most cordial support.
