THE NEVIS ELECTION.
(to the editor of the du.vstam times.) Sir I do not wish to impugn the report of the meeting held here on the 23rd lost month and reported in your last issue, tat desire to supply some few significant pan tieulars omitted, The report reads as if the meeting was convened by the residents of the Bannockburn, now this was not the case—it was got up by some few of the leading agitators of Cromwell, (under the guise of friendship)), with the view of in ‘ citing the peop.de of Bannockburn to notnr nate one of their number, and afterwards to elect him in direct opposition to the wishes of the Nevis residents, a further object being to plant a thorn in the aide of Vincent Pyke, Esq., Member, and present Chairman of the Vincent County Board, this latter of course was hid as much as possih e, hut the little game was too apiparent, the result of the meeting I. think fully e” 11 vinood Messrs Grant, Colclough and that the Bannockburn people are not at times to ho led by the nose. The idea to get nominated Mr M'Kerzie, who won have been a pliant tool in their hands, ° it being discovered at the last moment t *
through certain pecuniary difficulties that gentleman was laboring under, he was incapacitated from holding a seat at tin Board, (if elected), a slight change in the programme had to be made. To effect this, they with consummate effrontery, and no little skilful manipulation, threw the onus of the meeting on the party, whoso only object at all in attending was to listen. The result was that Mr James Taylor was proposed, and he being for the time blinded by the sophistry of the gentle wooers, allowed himself to be nominated. I believe, however, seeing the invidious position he would be placed in by contesting the election, much more so if elected, and seeing that it is the desire of the Nevis residents to have one of themselves representing them at the County Board in the person of Mr W. M. Masters, has determined to retire and have hothing further to •do with it. Mind you, I only believe he has retired, not having any guarantee that such is the case, but I do hope such to be the case, as it will save a great deal of unpleasantness that otherwise would arise. Mr Masters, the gentleman nominated in the Nevis interest has the confidence of his neighbors, and if I mistake not, before he has been long a member the County Board, will be respected by his confreres. Apologising for occupying so much of your valuable space. I am, &c., Bannockburn Resident. May 1, 1877.
