- 'O— London, April 23. lu the course of the, debate on the Army Estimates in the German Reichstag, Count Von Moltke said he could not hope long for peace. He alluded to the readiness of France for war. and to the unusually large masses of troops between Paris and the frontier. London, April 2(5. Turkey’s answer to the Czar’s manifesto is that the attack of Russia is unprovoked. She appeals to the Treaty of 1856, and for the mediation of the European Powers. Russia is pouring her troops into Roumanb. Many have already arrived at
Oalatz. The Cossacks are marching on Kalafat. The Turks occupying llouraania have withdrawn into the interior. Prince Nitka, of Montenegro, is marching towards the frontier. The Turkish array is advancing upon Nicksch. ' Seventeen thousand Russians have crossed the Turkish frontier, and a largo force is on its way towards the Danube. There is a universal desire that England should remain neutral. The Paris Press do not consider Moltko’s speech hostile to Franco. April 27th. Lord Derby neither accepts nor adopts cither conclusion-of the arguments of QortschakofTs circular. On the 26th, the Russians crossed the Turkish frontier at Alexandropol, the main army moving towards Dalrocha, It is considered doubtful it the Turks will arrive in time to prevent the passage of the Danube. The Russians commenced hostility at Ardahan to-day, and routed the Turks near Batoum, with a loss to the latter of 800 men. April 29th. It was the Russians, and not the Tuiks, who were routed at Batoum. The Russians have'not occupied Kalafat. It is denied that they have anywhere crossed the Danube. ft is sta+ed that Russia threatens reprisals if the Khedive of Egypt helps Turkey, and that France is dissuading the Khedivo from interfering. A further fall has occurred in the stock market. Consols are down to 94. Colonial bonds generally have gone one per cent lower. The Berlin and Antwerp wool sales show great depression. Prices are lower, and heavy withdrawals. The wheat market is still rising. There has been an advance during the month of 25 per cent., mainly owing to American speculation. New Zealand, 64s to 68s. Arrived.—Waimea. April 30. The Turks have commenced bombarding Poti, Anaklia, and Galatz. The Russion troops have occupied Ismail, cn the north bank of the Silia branch of the Danube. The Porte refuses to recognise German protection of Russian subjects. The European powers have rejected the Porte’s proposal for mediation. Italy remains neutral.
