Dr Carr announces m another column that on Wo Inosday Everting next ho will, in the Town Hall. Clyde, deliver his popular Lecture—Subject “The Supernatural and the human Soul," being a reply to “ Materialism and Free Thought; and on Thursday evening ho will appear at Alexandra. The Lecture on either occasion to conclude with interesting experiments in phrenology. It is estimated by those in a position to judge that Commodore Vandorbret, who has just died in Washington, was t)ieowner of securities having the present market value of L 17,000,000, and that of this total fully LI 1,000,000 consisted of stock of the New York Central and Hudson Railway. A Company to acquire the property, including the manufactories, plant and stock in trade, and fleet of vessels, the property of Messrs Guthrie andLarnaeh, of Dunedin is being started. The capital is to bo in 50,000 shares of L 5 each, of which it is proposed to call up only L.'i per share, payments to extend over a year. Messrs Guthrie and Larnaeh retain 20,000 shares, 10,000 to be fully paid up by them in cash, and 4000 to be allotted to them for the goodwill of the business. There is at last an indirect assurance that the Government intend to complete the water works before handing them over to anybody. It is then, we believe, intended to offer them to ’the County Council, together with the extra liabilities incurred over and above the sums originally voted. If the Council do not care to take the works upon those conditions the Government propose to retain'the management and revenue in their own hands. It is a wonderful relief to us to astertain that the Government has a mind at all, or L a vehicle, however round about, by which to announce its decisions to the world.—Mount Ida Chronicle. Not a bad story is told of an ex-member of [the Otago Provincial Council who was doing his rounds in the city yesterday. Happening to call at an office, he was confronted with a large illuminated placard bearing the insignia, in large coloured letters, of the Northern Assurance Company. 1 Ah !” said he to the agent, “there’s been too much of that lately. We’ve had a feast and a surfeit of Northern assurance, and it’s high time that our members brought a little hit of ‘sturdy Southern assurance just to teach them manners at Wellington. A good way to take grease spots out of books or papers is to place a piece of blotting paper on the under side of the leaf and rub the grease sped with a piece of sponge or woollen cloth containing a small quantity of benzine. This powerful chemical preparation is also special'} - suitable for cleansing colored inks from type’ It will remove dry ink when lye and turpentine fail to do so. The chief objections to its use are its offensive odour add its inflammability. It should, if possible, be kept out of doors and never used except by daylight. A number of young men of the larrikin species paid the Oval a visit «n Friday night last, and commenced breaking down the seats placed for the public convenience inside the Oval. This did not satisfy them An attempt was made to set fire to the grand stand, and had it not been for the interference of the custodian of the ground the consequences would have been serious. They had collected a lot of paper and placed it under the stand, and even went so far as to light it, when they were discovered. This surely should be a matter for the police to inquire into, and, if possible, find out who the perpetrators are.—Dunedin Guardian. The Independent is responsible for the following :—There are some smart chiels doing business in Victoria. The shifts of the hard-up are a chronicle of deep interest at any time, but I never remember a more ingenious one than one which came to ray knowledge recently. A hard-pressed unfortunate, whose abilities should command success, bethought himself howto save time in the long vacation, and induced a friendly creditor to apply for : 6n order nisi lor the sequestration of his estate. The result of this little move is, that the order cannot he made absolute until February next, and, meantime, the fact that an order nisi exists is Sufficient protection against importunate creditors, and writs, threats, and demands will be to that half-sequestrated iuso’vent as the idle wind. The little game has been ingeniously played, but it is a good thing for financial institutions that such ingenuity is rare. The Mount Ida Chronicle says Vigoi v ous efforts are being made to constitute new Counties of Kawarau and Tapanui. The Kawarau partisans, incensed by the action of the Vincent County Council, are going into their work in earnest. The course to ho followed is simple, and the County Councils of Vincent and Tliapeka, it appears, have no direct say in the matter. All that is requisite is that three-fifths of the County electors in the district proposing to secede should agree to petition the Governor. If this is done, and Parliament during its next session does not interfere, the severmice is complete. The course docs not commend itself as being a wise one ; yet, if the party persist, it is undoubtedly easy of accomplishment. The area of any new-Connty must he at least 200,000 acres in extent, and contain 100 electors. The Tapanui agitation is remarkable, as it is headed by the Chairman of the Tuapoka County Council himself, and appears to be more of the nature of an amicable arrangement.
