NEVIS.

(Communicated). February 27. In Consequence of a Circular letter received from the Cromwell Committee appointed to take political action re Comity affairs, andalso towards the resignation of Vincent Pyke, Esq., a public meeting was called to be held in the Nevis township on tin 23rd Current, hut owing to a perfect down pour of rain the said meeting was unavoidably postponed till the following evening, when about thirty of the Nevis electors passed the following resolutions which were carried unanimously. Mr Charles Richmond in the Chair. Proposed by Mr W. Masters, seconded by Mr Little : —That this meeting views with great indignation the officious and unwarrantable interference of the citizens of Cromwell in the affairs of the County, seeing that as a Corporate body they arc outside the County, and many of them not having a vote ; they have the presumption to dictate to us the residents of an Electoral district in which nearly every man possesses that privilege. Proposed by Mr M'Dovvall, seconded byMr Stratford :—That we as voters of the Nevis Riding dedline to co-operate with the people of Cromwell, either in calling upon Mr Pyke to resign his seat in the House of Representatives, or in the attempt to create, a new County out of a 'portion of Vincent County. Proposed by Mr Stratford, seconded by Mr Mr Joseph Kemighan:—That this meeting, as a body representing every shade and difference of opinion, both in politics and religion in the Nevis Riding, do hereby pass a Vote of entire Confidence in Mr Pyke, both as our Member of the House of Representatives, and Chairman of the County Council. Proposed by Mr Samuel Kemighan, seconded by Mr Williamson:—That having seen by the Cromwell Argus of tho 20th current that a petition purporting to be signed by the residents of the Mawea, KaWarau and Nevis Ridings is about t) b. sent to His Excellency the Governor, we, residents of tho Nevis, now desire 1o record that we -have not signed any such petition, neither do we intend doing so. Three cheers were then given for Mr Pyke, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the meeting. At a public meeting held in O’Connell’s Hotel, Upper Nevis, on Monday, tie 30th February, for the purpose of co operating with the residents of the Lower Nevis in public meeting assembled, the following resolutions were carried unanimously. Mr W. Masters in the Chair. That this meeting desires to express unqualified disapprobation of the action of the residents of Cromwell in seeking to organize disruption in the County in the interest of a portion of the non-ratepayers of the County—Proposed by Mr Thomas Norris, seconded by Mr James Adams. That this meeting is of opinion that the action of the people of Cromwell in the matter of Separation, being organised and supported in the interest of the Borough of Cromwell possesses no sufficient grounds for the support of the Nevis as a Riding, and is fraught with danger to the County. That this meeting, consisting of qualified electors, pledges itself to discountenance any measure of Separation that has its basis on so trivial a cause of complaint. Proposed by Mr John Biyloa, seconded by Mr Richard Bateman -.—That a Com mittee consisting of the following gentlemen be appointed to watch over the interest of the Nevis Riding during the meaningless endeavor to divide the County by means subversive to local self government. The following are the gentlemen forming the Committee Messrs M‘Dovvall, R. Little, William Kemighan, William Masters, John Bayloa, Charles Richmond, John Snow, Samuel Kemighan, William O’Connell, John Newton, George Stratford, and James M‘Donald, Secretary.
