WANAKA ANNUAL RAGES.

This event took place on Friday and Saturday, the 13th and 14th of October inst. on the Albert Town Race Course, which, for the benefit of our readers, we may state, is situate on a terrace on the fork between the outlet of Lake Wan aka into the Olntba and the Cardrona River, and about mid-way between the townships of Newcastle (Albert Town) and Pembroke (Lake Wanaka;) The course is most pleasantly situate, and dicing on high ground commands as magnificent a view of mountain scenery as i= to bo obtained in any one part of the province, and to those who are fond of lake and mountain scenery we would recommend the locality for a vhit, feeling assured they would consider themselves well paid for the journey Of first-class accommodation there is abundance in the neighborhood—Russell’s W inaka Hotel and Norman of the Albert Town Hotel, either or bothjseingeverything the most fastidious could desire Up till past mid-day oh Friday the weather was anything but promising, it having rained heavily from early morning, and fears were entertainol that the meeting would be am - thing but a success ; fortunately, however, the clouds htoke and a fine afternoon followed The racihg throughout was sterling and honest, each horse being ridden with the full purpose of winning, and had a contest taken place for the Ladies’ Purse, instead of a walk over, there could not and would not have been a word of complaint uttered. On Saturday the day broke gloriously fine, and brought with it an increase! attendance of visitors, ’’flio racing, as on the previous day, was good and interesting, as the favorite in no one instance succeeded in carrying off the money, though a game struggle took place over the whole. The stewards carried out the programme in a fair and impartial manner, and well earned the praise that was accorded fhem by, owners, riders, and visitors ahke. Mr Maidman. of the Lnggate Creek Hotel, had the booth and was well patronised, though a steadier and quieter gathering could not have boon. Amongst the visitors we noticed several of the notabilities of Cromwell, Cardrona, and Arrow, and nil alike expressed their satisfaction with tho sport affor’ed. Appended below are tho particulars of the racing.

Stanly, from his performances on the first day, was thought to have a chance, and hut for him unfortunately bolting at the turn going into the last mile there is but little doubt he would have won, as till then he had been leading with Glengarry second. Goodman now seeing his advantage gave his horse a smart cut or two, and increasing his distance, fairly raced his horse home.
