DUNSTAN DISTRICT SPRING RACE MEETING.
This meeting took place on Friday last the 29th ultimo on the Clyde Race Counp, and was considering the limito 1 population in the district, the general depression experienced in every quarter and by all classes, caused iu a groat measure by the very severe winter, from the effects of which, neither miners or farmers had had time to recover, and arlrled to all the fact of a similar meeting having been held at Alexandra on the Tuesday previous, and another meeting to he held at Cromwell on the following Friday, nnd still another during the next wiek at Albert Town, and yet another, the fifth, during (he following week, making in all 5 Race M ectinps in less than the same number of Weeks, and the whole within a radius of fifty-five miles, as successful an affair as could ho expected, though there is no shutting the eyes to the fact that it was in no n.io sense ss successful, as could have been desired, yet withall,lt was not so gloomy an affair as some of the “ you know you know 11 sort of people aver. The racing
for enoh event wfta well contested, and the field of horses fat above the average. The arrangements .for carrying ottf the meeting were everything that could bo desired. Tne course was in good condition; the stewards were in their proper places, and Used ovot y diligence in getting off the events ; and Host Eames, who had charge of the Grand Stand, bad everything the thirsty man could desire. Mr Goodman’s Rosemary, 2yre, 6st 13lb 1 ~ Bucknell’s Foam,'6yrs, lOsf lib ~ 2 ~ Stewart's Comet, syrs, 9sl 121b ... 3 Mr M‘VTaster's Clontarf, syrs ; Mr Crawford’s ‘Blackcock, Syrsq and Mr Holt’s Polly, 4yrs, also came to the post. ‘Comet kept the lead for half-a-mile, when Rosemary took leading place, and running true, won easily. A protest was entered against the mare for running inside a post at the turn coming into 'the ‘straight, lire stewards hoard the evidence but disallowed the-protest. Dunstan Handicap of-20 sovs. Distance,
one mile and a half. Mr Taylor’s Haricot, aged, Bst 101b ... 1 ~ M‘Gregor’s Freeze, aged Sat 71h ... 2 „ Goodman’s Rosebud, 3yrs, 7«t 71b... 3 ~ Johnson’s Sultan. 4yrs, ; Bat 51b .. 4 ’Mr Goodman's Glengarry, aged, Oat 51b ; and Mi M'Gregor’a Miatletoc, aged Bat'4lb, did not accept. _ Haricot, though carrying thctop’woight, and in anything but fine very rough, yet outpaced the others and landed home some few lengths in advance Of Freeze, who, however, gamely ran. Sultan kept the lead till the three quarter-mile post, where he fell into the rear, apparently pimped. Selling Race of 15 sovs. Distance, three-quarter-mile heats. No weight under
10st. Winuer'to he sold for 15 sOvs. Mr M'Qregor’s Clyde ... ... 1 1 ~ Taylor's Francis .. ... 22 Foam, Cripple, Manuka, and Charley also started.
Both heats were -Won by Clyde, hands down ; and after the race he was submitted to competition by Mr Facbe, when he realized L 25. Tradesmen’s Handicap of 15 govs. Distance, one mile. Mr Taylor’s Haricot, aged, 9st 121b ... 1 ~ R. Stewart’s Spinaway, 3yrs, 7at7lbs 2 Mr Johnson’s Sultan, Bst 71b; Mr Goodman’s Glengarry, 9st 121bs ; Mr M‘Gregor’s Freeze, Sst 121bs ; MrM'Gregor’s Mistletoe, Bst 41bs ; Mr Goodman’s Rosebud, 7st 71hs ; Mr Rivers’ Kelly, Sst; and Mr Oliver’s Flying Beauty, Sst 21hs, were also entered. Glengarry, Freeze, and Sultan, however, did not start.
After a few feints and some dodging, a start was effected, Haricot and the young o ie takiug the lead, which they maintained home. A game struggle took place between them, but the grey proved the fleetest, winning by a short le..gth only.
Hack Selling Rack df 10 sovs. Distance, one mile. No weight under 9st. Winner to be Buld for LIO. Mr Bucknell’s F--am was 'declared the winner of this race, Young Roebuck, Actress, J ickass, and Clontarf competing against her. Foam, after the race, was sold by auction, and realized Ll6, Mr H. Goodman being the purchaser. Consolation Handicap of 5 sovs. Distance, three-quarters of a mile, Mr M’Gregor’s Freeze. Ost ... ... 1 „ Stewart's Comet, 7st 71b ... ... 2 Flying Beauty, Sst; and Nelly, 7st 12Ibs, also went to the post, they, howe'-ei, refused the call, and left the race in the hands of Freeze and Comet, who ran a plucky race.
