ROXBURGH.

{FROSI OUR COKUE3POSDEXT.) April 26. There has hcon a great deal of excitement and indignation hero during the past few days at the action of the Provincial Government in attempting to sell privately to the Rnnholders 61,000 acres on the goldfields. A large public meeting was held at the Commercial Assembly Room on the evening of Monday the 25th instant, Mr M. E. Manuel, Chairman of the Progress Committee presided. A number of persons addressed the meeting—it was stated that Maoandr w and eid were at the bottom of this sacrifice of the public estate, and it was suggested that the General Government should b- petitioned to assume tho control of the goldfields. An unanimous resolution was passed to the following effect—“ That this meeting view with alarm the proposed sales to Cargill and Anderson, and Neil, comprising all lands available for settlement in the d-strict—Such salca will bo hi each of lui'- b as they embrace several agri cnltu ral blocks pro misod by the Government, mid authorised by the Provincial Council to be opened for public settlement, and if ci rripfl out will effectually crush all settlement, and drive the people out of tho district,” It is to bo hoped that as active and united assistance has been offered from different parts of tho gold-fields, that this unwarranted injustice will not ho done ns. There was a very heavy fall of rain hero on Sunday night, the Molyneux rose con-

sidorably, and although no serious damage was done to any of the claims at tho Teviot itself—besides Hooding them out—yet lower down the river the boats belonging to Messrs Green and Co's water raising apparatus, of which so much was expected, sank, and have since been washed away as no trace of them can now be found, Mr Ormond has converted his largo Flail into a Billiard Saloon, for which the place is well adapted, and in which are now placed two excellent Billiard Tables, and no doubt will bo well patronized. Mr D. M‘Donald has made great, progress with tho Bridge across tho Molyneux, and in about a fornight persons will be ablo to cross with safety.
