ROXBURGH.
— o , ' , (FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) . I am glad to say, and doubtless the friends of Mr Timothy Wilkins, lato of Spear Grass Flat, will bo glad to hear that he has riot met with an accident whereby his’leg was broken, as was currently reported during the .early part of last week. It is impossible to say whence the rumor originated, and Mr Wilkins who was hero on Saturday last was as much surprised to hear of the accident to himself as his friends were to seo him walking about in good health. " ' ' , The present arrangement under which persons have to travel by Messrs Cobb and coaches is a source of groat inconvenience and annoyance to the people residing at the Teviot. Persons leaving for, and starting from Dunedin, make the Beuger Burn the first day, a distance of about seven or eight miles from lloxburgh, and the inconvenience is still greater to those arriving by the Saturday’s coach at the Benger Burn, and who are there detained till tho following Monday, at so short a distance from home ; whereas, by a little alteration in the time, and at no extra , expense to tho Company,
tho; through Journey to Dunedin could ho made in one day, and this ijs not too much to expect considering the railway communication from Milton; indeed, under tho existing arrangement wo are'in a Worse position than formerly. And oven allowing that a greater number of persons travel from the Bonger Burn, surely they could be picked up on tho road, ami in case of an accident or delay occurring there is tho telegraph station and other advantages at Roxburgh which are not at hand at tho Benger Bum. Taking everything into consideration, we hope ere long to see an alteration made more suited to the requirements of the travelling public. A parsonage is much needed here, in connection with the Church of England. Wo possess a neat little Church, and with tho pecuniary assistance afforded by the neighboring stations could lio doubt support a minister were there a suitable residence for one. . An effort is now being made to raise funds for that purpose, and it has been decided to hold a bazaar and an art union to augment the Building Fund, on Monday the 27th of December next. A number of ladies who have kindly taken tho bazaar in hand, have, so far, been very successful in obtaining contributions., and will, no doubt, carry out the affair v.i.h unflagging zeal and energy A want that has long been felt in this district is about to be supplied, and an agency of the Permanent Building Society of 'Otago is to be established here. About 170 applications for shares have been made already, and the first meeting wi l ! he held on Friday next. Judging from the desire of tho people generally for the establishment of such an agency, there can be little doubt but that a fair amount of business will be transacted with the Society. The showers that have fallen during the last day or two have done good, and more rain would do no harm. The Molyncux is high, and the claims that are working have very little to spare, as a rise of a few inches would stop the work in most of them. The Hit or Miss Company left for their claim in Potters’ Gully on Saturday last.
