CROMWELL SPRING RACES.

Friday and Saturday, Oct. Ist and 2nd. This meeting, like the preceding events held at Alexandra and Clyde on the previous weeks, drew together a largo concourse of people, and was a perfect success. The weather in the early morning, and as late as noon, looked anything but promising, heavy clouds hanging about, portending a storm ; however, by noon a change took place, and for the rest of the day Queen’s weather reigned. This fact deterred many from Clyde putting in an appearance, and doubtless as well from other places, yet withal each part ot the district was fairly represented, making a most respectable whole. The management could not be questioned, neither hitch nor dispute occurring throughout the meeting, saving one over the Maiden Plate, which had to bo run for a second time, the starter averring they got away before the flag fell, but this was doubtless more the fault of the riders than of the starter, who, in explaining said, "drat them, a man could as easily manage a basket of flow as tho young scamps, they were so eager.” Tho fencing in of a space all round the Grand Stand, and thus keeping horses from treading'up the ground and creating dust, isaverv great improvement, and will be more noticeable by next year; when a good sole of grass will have grown in the enclosure. The particulars of the events are as follows : Maiden Plate of 10 sovs. Distance, one mile. Smith’s Haricot ... ... ... 1 Dnuhig's Bnughleea Dona ... ... 2 M’Gregor’s Doctor ... ... ... 3 Six others started, viz., Echo, Polly, Nardoo,. Spinaway, Kate, and Snip. After a good race Haricot winning by lengths, Doctor second, and Echo third, it was decided no start, and consequently hal to bo run over again, After ashort spell the starter again took his place, but only five faced him. Getting away Haricot again got to fore, and though hard pressed by Boughleen Dcnn, a colt, but a few weeks handled, carried off the palm, Doctor third. Hack Race of 10 sovs. Three-quarter mile heats. Kidd's Clyde won both heats easily. Cromwell Handicap of 15 sovs. Distance, one mile and a half. Wadde'l’s Leamington ... ... 1 C'd'ins 1 Frances .. ... ... 2 M‘Gregor’s Ivanhoe ... ... ... 3 Laing’s Flora ... ... ... 4

Ivanhoe cut out tho running from tho start with Flora close up, at about the mile Waddell forged ahead, with Frances at his heel, hence homo making a good race with above result. Hack Selling Race of 10 sovs. One mi'e. Kidd’s Clyde won this easily, against two others. Handicap Trot of 5 sovs. Two miles. Was won by Miss Chips, by more than 100 yards; Nelly second, but on weighing in Miss Chips was short weight, and had to give over tho honor to Nelly. Five others started. Hack Selling Race of 10 sovs. Threequarter mile heats. Clyde won both boats. Handicap of 20 sovs. One mile and a half. Ivanhoe • ... ... 1 Young Leamington ... 2 Dungiveil Lass ... ... 3 This was an excellent race, tho two horses changing places several times. Consolation Handicap of 5 sovs. Three quarters of a mile. This race was won by Mr Stewart’s Waikaia beating Frances and Flora. The Hospital Race, for which over LIC was collected, brought the meet to a close, and was won by Mr Fierce’s Moonlight.
