ROXBURGH.

—o— a COURESPONDEXT.) August 1(1, 1875. The first meeting of the new Town Council was held on Monday the 9th instant. Present, J. Beig.iton, Esq, Mayor, and Councillors G. F. Mackay, James Woodhouse, J. Glass, H. Rees, and Janies Heighten. Telegrams were received from T. L. Shepherd, M.H. H., respecting boundary of Electoral District, and from J, B. Bradshaw, M. H.R., respecting the Bill for the abolition of Provinces. Amongst the inward correspondence was a letter from the Town Clerk of Clyde re extension of Central Ctago Railway from Lawrence to Clyde with copy of Petition. Immediate steps were taken for forwarding the same. The rest of the business transacted was lelative to the alteratioh in the formation of Hawick street. There was also a meeting of the Athenaeum Building Committee on the 11th inst, when the following gentlemen were present : Jas. Beighton (in the chair), K. M'Lellau, G. F. Mackay, T. Coop, E . Hughes, W.C. Hodges, D. Corraack, and Dr Leahy. Messrs Hughes and Hodges were instructen to treat with Mr John Brighton regarding the purchase of a section in Scotland street, adjoining the Roman Catholic chapel, and a former resolution authorising the Committee to build on the Athcmeum reserve was rescinded. The funds already in hand, together with the amount of subscriptions not yet collected, were deemed sufficient to enable the Committee to commence a building comprising a hall, reading room, and library, as soon as satisfactory arrangements could be made with Mr John Beighton regarding the said section. Thus, it is to be hoped, that a want which has long been felt in the district will shortly be supplied. The Good Templars of Roxburgh had an outing on the night of Wednesday, the 12th instant--a large number being present at the opening of the Lodge, 1 ‘ Banner of Liberty”, by Bro. King, S.D.S. At tho Bongor Burn and Miller’s Flat a good deal of land is being fenced and broken up with, the plo.nghThc mill isfully tn.ployed turning out excellent (lour. Mining news is also favorable from this quarter. T. Sheehy, at Welshman’s Beach, is on good gold. Nino wages men are employed, and the claim is worked night and day. A report is current that it is tho intention of tho Government to adhere to tho old line of road on the east side of the Molyneux from the Teviot upwards. It is to be hoped that such is not tho case, for the present road is very circuitous and completely blocks some of the claims. If there any foundation in the report, Mr Arthur, who is expected up during the week, will no doubt bo interviewed by persons interested.
