RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT, CLYDE.

'Walter Wiltshire Vause, Post-Master ami Telegraphist, stationed at Alexandra, was charged with embezzling certain monies, the property of the New Zealand Government. Mr Inspector Mooro watched the case for the prosecution. The accused was unrepresented. James Kennedy Logan depose]—l am Inspector of Telegraphs for the General Government of New Zealand, and know the accused, who was Post-Master and Teh* graphist at Alexandra ; he has held the position of Telegraphist for over eight years. I have laid the information against the accused in obedience to instructions from the Telegraph Commissioner. John Tinny will deposed—l am PostMaster and Telegraphist stationed at Clyde. Prom instructions received, 1 proceeded to Alexandra, o i Wednesday last, the 16th instant, to examine the 1 ooks in connection with accused’s office. I pro luce the Postoffice Money Order Rook. On reference to same I find taking into account, receipts, disbursements, cash in ban 1, and balance in the Bank, a deficit of LSI 15s lOd. I also discovered the following deficits :■ -Postage Stamp account, L2 17s 9d; Duty Stamps account, Lll Is Id; Telegraph account, LI 4s 7d. William Grant Eorhos, Agent for the Bank of New Zealand, Alexandra, deposed I know tho accused in his capacity of Postmaster and Telegraphist, he did business at my Agency. He kept an account called the Post-office account, and from time to time he paid monies into the New Zealand, Government Public account. To the former account there is a credit balance of Ll9 Os Bd. The accused declining to say anything was committed for trial, bail being allowed himself in LIOO, and two sureties of LIOO each.
