BISHOP SELWYN ON DRINK AT FUNERALS.

—o — Speaking of funerals reminds mo that Bishop Selwyn has boon coming .out on the subject in connection with drinking habits. His Lordship is a strong advocate of the Church Temperance Society, and ho laments tho practice of Champagne lunches after occasions of consecrations of churches and burial grounds, and drinking at funerals. At the last-named practice ho launched forth tremendously at Wolverhampton tho other day, and said that many poor widows were often made poorer by it. He called upon two hundred people to join him in pledging themselves not to drink before or after funerals. This same Society is being tho means of doing much good.

More of the Judge.—“ You have a pleasant home, and a bright fireside, with happy children sitting around it, haven’t you?” “Yes air,” said Thompson, who thought ho saw a way out of the dificulty. “ Well,” said the judge, “if the happy children sit around tho cheerful fireside until your return, they will stay there just 43 days, as I shall have to send you up for that time.”—Detroit Free Press. Rev. Dr Gumming of Crown Court, recently stated that, without wishing to be vainglorious, he had to take credit for tho fulfilment, or pending fulfilment, of tho prophecies which ho had uttered, for some twenty years previously. According to tho united testimony of Mr Gladstone and Mr Disreali the whole world was upon the eve of tho most tremendous conflict which had over shaken it to its foundations, at tho conclusion of which Christ would appear in His second coming.
