AMOVING APPEAL.

What drunkard could hear unmoved such observations as those which, according to the “ Detriot Free Press," were addressed the other day hy a judge to a man named John Robinson who, having drunk enough liquor at a saloon to “ trip him up,” shouted for the police, and on their obeying the summons called them lira's and otheiwise abused them 1 “ I was,” said the prisonerwinking at the judge, “having a little fun.” “ John Robinson,” replied the judge, “ arc you aware that this is a very solemn world—a world which has ten heartaches to one srailel Don’t you know that the grim shadow of grief rests upon every doorstep, and that the toomhstono in the cemeteries almost outnumber the trees in the forest 1 There’s wailing in every household, John Robinson ; there’s grief in every heart. And yet you claim that you were only having a little fun.” Hero the prisoner broke in with the words, “That’s all, your honor, it was a holiday.” “It was,” continued the judge, the tears streaming down his cheeks, “ said fun, John Robinson. While the rest of ns were swearing off and making double-back-action resolves, you were lying at the corner of an alloy dead drunk. It is sdol. or GO days, sir; and if this case were before a Chicago police-justice he’d make it 600dol. or a life sentence.” Towards the close of his address the judges voice was almost stifled by emotion ; there was not a dry eye in court, save that of John Robinson, whose features were overspread by a deadly pallor as each word from the Bench fell on his ear, and seemed to pierce his heart like the the st ib of a dagger.
