ALEXANDRA TOWN COUNCIL.
[The following was unavoidably held over from our last issue.] A Special Meeting of the Council was held on the 3rd of August, when a full meeting of Councillors were present. CORRESPONDENCE. 0 A letter was read and received from the lessees of the Corporation Water-race, a.lcing the Council to deduct one month’s rent, in consideration of the losses they had sustained by bad weather. Cr Thayers moved and Cr Finlay seconded, That the lessees of the race bo allowed nine months for the payment of tho month’s rent now duo by an acceptance. Moved, as an amendment, by Cr Rivers, seconded by Cr Beresford, 'That half the month’s rent be deducted, on condition that the remaining half he paid at once. Tho original motion Was carried.
A Special Meeting of tho Town Council was held on the 11th instant. A full meeting of Councillors present. Tho Mayor said the meeting had been called to take into consideration an application from the Flour Mill Company, ask* ing this Council if it could let them two heads of water from the Chatto Creek for tho use of the mill, and upon what terms. After considerable discussion, it was moved by Cr Finlay, seconded by Cr Beresford, and carried, That a deputation consisting of the Mayor and Crs Rivers and Thcyers wait upon the lessees of the race, to ascertain if arrangements could be made with them to let two heads of water to tho Flour Mill Company ; tho deputation to report to the Council as early as convenient.
The usual vote of thanks closed the meeting.
The released convict Gardiner has been sent out of the Australian colonies by tho barque Charlotte Andrews, Captain Place, from Newcastle, bound for Hong Kong. An exchange says he was taken on board by Sub-Inspector Thorpo, late in tho afternoon, and directly thereafter the barque was turned out to Sea.
In speaking to his father’s coachman of a neighboring family, a young man remarked that “ they were happy until sorrow suddenly came and left ner traces there.” The coachman looked puzzled, but finally responded, “ Indeed, sir; an’ what did she do with the rest of the harness!”
