The usna 1 m thly meeting of the Counoil was held in the Council Chambers, ou Wednesday evening last the 15th instant at 7, p. m. Present,, B. Naylor Esq, Mayor, and Councillors Hazlett, Beck, Auckland Clark, Cox and Aldridge. The minutes of the previous meetings were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence, as follows .was read and received. From Mr Thomas Hawthorne, asking for a reduction of rates on his premises (Clyde Hotel), which werebnrnt down. From the Provincial Secretary’s Office— Dunedin, June 30. Sir,-I am directed to acquaint you, fnr the information of the Town Council, that the Government has had under consideration the advisability of taking some more effectual steps than heretofore towards the suppression of illicit traffic in spirituous liquors ;'and with that view it proposes to appoint a Revenue offioerfor the Province with sufficient assistance to enable him to procure the conviction of persons guilty of soiling without being duly licensed. It is also proposed that he shall be specially r instrncte I?frelative to the inspectmn of weights and measures, and to enforce the provisions of the ‘ Dangerous Goods Act, 1860,’ ‘ Adulteration of Food Act, iB6O, ’ the Bakers’ and Millers’ Act, 1871.’ Hitherto the Corporation of Dunedin has contributed towards the cost of the Revenue Department, fand the Government, believing the country Corporations arefequally interested injpreserving good order and morality 'within | the Munic;pal boundaries before proceeding to make the proposed appointment, wishes to Is informed what proportion of the probable cost —say 700/. per annum—the Corporation of Clyde is prepared to contribute. .Such contributions being distributed over so many Municipalities, the Government thinks would press very lightly upon the revenues of each.—l have &c., Alex. Willis, Under Secretary, Prom Mr F. J. Wilson, Solicitor in reply recommending the Clyde JTown Conncil to adopt parts 12, 13, [l7, 18, 19, 20 22 of the Municipal Corporations’Act, and pointed out mode of procedure. Instruction to Town (Clerk to acquaint Mr Hawthorne by letter (that the Council have no power to accede to the request, and further, that it it was taken into consideration the time during the current Municipal year, the building was in existence and the value of the property as it now stands, the amount to bo allowed would be so reduced that the Council deem it not worth while to go into the matter. Discussion ensued on letter from Provincial Secretary’s office The Mayor said the Council would be guided by what other Municipalities would do in the matter.
Cr Hazlettsaid this was a matter in which the Council should give an independent opinion, what other Municipalities might think proper to do hi the matter was nothing to them, for his own part ho would strongly object to anything being contributed by this Council who could do very well without such an officer. It would be well for Dunedin, who Mouhtless required an officer of the kind, to sadd'e the expense on the un-countr >' Municipalities ; if, in the opinion of the Government such an officer and staff were required for the Province, the salary should bt paid out of the Provincial revenue, ho would most strongly ol jeet. Resolved that the Government e informed that Clyde is not in want of such an officer , and declines to contribute. Resolved that a special meeting of the Counil he convened for Friday the 17th instant at / p.m, to consider letter from Mr I*. J. D ilson, re Municipal Corporation Act. The Town Clerk was instructed to lodge applications with the District Land Officer for the transferring of Water Licenses hel l by the Council under the Gold-tields’Act to the Waste Lands’ Act. The Mayor said he had been again disappointed in obtaining the services of the Surveyor to lay out the course of the w; ter-race from Wia Puna Creek ; in waiting I on the Government Snrveyhr, fully two , months had been lost, and nnwMrMackay informs him that unless an order from the head of Ins depart'ment be obtained, he will not do the work. The Council hail spent a good deal of money over the Water Works’ Bill, and if it was intended to carry it through, the services of a survey or must be ohtaiue dby some means or other it being necessary to have the course of the race laid down by a competent Surveyor, and plans made of the same, or it was open to be disturbed at any time.
Cr Ilazlett said Mr M'Kellar, Goldfields’ Secretary, fwould pass through the town in the course of a day or \ two—if the matter was brought under his notice and fully explained, it might bo arranged. Rraoived that the Mayor and Council lo" Ilazlett wait on Mr M'Kellar as a da pul. lino f cm (hi- Counc’l.
