Sir, I beg to make application on behalf of Mrs Finlay and Mrs Chappie to place as«wing machine in the School for the put pose of the girls being taught the same, it being understood that the machine be under the charge of Mrs Finlay and Mrs Chappie, and will you kindly get an answer at once, and do not delay until your next monthly meeting. Year’s truly, John Cole Cuappm. Alexandra, February 18, 1874. Mr.'J. 0. Chappie, Sir,—!, have been requested by the Alexandra School Committee to acknowledge the receipt of your favor, of the 18th of February, and to inquire whether the serving machine referred to was pursehased for the use of the Schools ; ami, if bo, to request that it he handed over to tnc Sciiool Committee. I am, Ac., Jame< Rivers. Acting Secretary, A.S.C. Alexandra, March ,'i, 1874. To the Alexandra School Committee: Gentlemen,—l received your letter, hearing date the 3rd of March, 1874, and am i instructed by Hie Cubes’ Committee to I inform you they can only account for your ! absurd request to hand over the sewing machine to your care, on the supposition j that you arc entirely ignorant ol tire merits of the case. The money was collected to augment the funds already in the bauds of ihe Ladies’ Committee tor the purchase of sewing machine ; conditions being—the ladies to reta n charge of it. And, while acknowledging your superior knowledge of sewing in general, and , sowing ma-chincs in particular, we also know your terra of oliice exists for one year only, and your successors might he, gentlemen, of inferior ability in the. superintendence of embroidery ; in fact, might altogether disapprove of both sewing and sewing machine. Under the circumstances, you cannot fail to perceive the impropriety of the Indies resigning ibeir trust, and thereby betraying the confidence reposed in thorn by subscribers. I am Ac., John Cole Chapple, Horn. Sec. and Treas. Ladies’ Com. Alexandra, March 14, 1874.
