THE PALMER GOLD DIGGINGS.
— o — lates news from Rockhampton about the Palraet gold-fields, as published iu the Australasian we give below. Monday, Feb. 16. The population at the Palmer River numbers 2,000, and there are only ten tons of provisions, and no further supplies expected till March. The rivers are still flooded. Four and a half inches of rain fell inoue day. Friday, Feb, 20. A carrier just returned to Townsville from Palmer River, reports that tho wet seas on has set in, and that (there has heon no communication between Palmer and Gookstown for fourteen days. All the rivers were flooded Tor a distance of 8C miles, and it was impossible for horsemen to travel until the termination of the wet season. The population at the'diggings is 1,600, with 500_on the road, and 1,000 at Gookstown. The steamers Florence, Irving Alexandra and Boomerang had arrived at Endeavour with 600 passengers. The price of provisions at the I’almer were, --Flour, 18/. per bag ; Tea, 5s per lb. ; Sugar, 2s per lb [Tobacco, 14s per lb. There is no meat of any description to be obtained, either fresh or preserved.
