MOUNT IDA JOCKEY CLUB ANNUAL RACES.

—o—(Condensed from Alt. Ida Chronicle ). Singularly favored by the weather, th e result of the first daysjraces must be very satisfactory to‘the Club. As was expect • ■ed, the attendance’of residents was small, but we never renumber at any meeting see ing a better muster from the out districts. Added to this, the horses were numerous, and well classed to make the contests interesting and bona fide. At about one the bell was rung out for the Maiden Plate. Maiden Plate, of 25 sovs, for all horses that’bave won an advertised prize of 20/. or over (matches and hack i accs excepted). Distancojone mile and a half. Sileno (Jackson) 1 May Queen (Gault) 2 Inveresk (T. Cotton) 3 There were sevon entries for the above race.

Flying Handicap, of 35 sovs. Distance, one mile. Coquett, 7st 31b (T, Cotton) 1 Brunette, 9st 61b (Waddell) 2 Medora, ,9st 21b (Gault) 3 There were five entries for this'race. A middling start was only effected—Border Lad being shut out, and swerving, thus losing his chance. Gamecock was off best, with the inside running, followed by Coquet, and, we think, Medora. At Lhe three-quatter*mile Brunette was out of’ it, clearly outweighted. Gamecock .and Coquet then were left to fight it out, Gamecock's wervingiat the distance flag, running inside, ,and was consequently distanced, Coquet, sailing in about four lengths ahead of Brunette, Medora succeeded in getting within half a length of the second horse. District Hack Race of 20 sovs. No weight under Sst. Distance, one -mile There were five entries for this'race. Seven entries. Camccock, Gstlolbs (Potter) 1 Coquet, 6st lOlbs (S. Inder) 2 Taffrail, 7st 121bs 3 This race brought to an end a most successful day’s sport, thoroughly enjoyed by the visitors on the ground. Between 300 and 400 were present through the afternoon. SECOND DAY. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 35 sovs. one mile heats. Over four flights of hurdles. Threejentries., Banjo, 9st 21b (Gault) 1 0 0 Medora, list 41b (M'Kay) 2 11 Miss Tatton, 9st 71b (Smith) 3 Mount Ida Handicap, of 70 sovs. Distance, one mile and a half. Four entries. Gamecock, Sst (Cotton) 1 Wild Manx Boy, Sst4lb (Richardson) 2 Ta frail, Bst 21b (M‘Nolly) 3 Border Lad, Sst 71b 0 After one false start—Manx Boy trying to bolt—a beautiful sta-t was effected. At the straight Tafiail was lying behind. Coming past the stand the order was— Border Lad, Gamecock, Manx Boy, and Tafrail. At the three-quarter mile Border Lad set bis tail going, and was out of the race—Tafrail still lying behind; Gamecock and his stable companion, Manx Boy lying together. Taffrail made her effort at the one and a quarter, and many thought she would come through her horses, but the pace appeared to be too hot. Gamecock, on the outside, half a length ahead, came up the straight past the box. Tafrail a bad third. District" Selling Race, of 20 sovs, Horses to be sold for 15L, to carry ■Sst 71b ; to bo sold for 10/., to carry Sst. Heats. Distance, three quarters of a mile. Five entries. Free Handicap, of 30 sovs., for all qualified horses. Distance, one mile and a quarter. Five acceptances. Rambler, 7st (Potter) 1 Coquet, lOst lib (Waddell) 2 Beeswing, Gst Glb (S. Inder) 3 Consolation Handicap, of 20 sovs, for all beaten horses. Distance one mile. Four entries. Border Lad, 7st 1 Tafrail, 7st 51b 2 The very best meeting yet held this season up co untry was bronght.to a conclusion, every race being honestly contested, and not a single event being a gift to any horse or stable. The Dunstan horses had been very much over-rated. We hope they will have better luck in Dunedin, as they are pluckily entered, and run to win. Speaking of Nelson, a facetious writer in the Canterbury Press says ;—‘‘l don’t think there is room here though for many more business men. I met a resident who tells me that in Nelson everyone who keeps horses and dogs has to keep triplicates of each. The place, he says, is that dozy that animals work one day and sleep two. Eggs arc dear because the fowls just lay one egg and then slumber for a fortnight. The dogs lean up against a fence to bark, and any human being who has resided hero for o week can sleep forty-eight hours on • s strotoh easily.”
