Surprise is a dark dappled bay, stands seventeen hands high, and is now rising seven years. He is a remarkably compact and powerful horse, with immense bone, line flat leg, unequalled action, and decile temper. He Las proved himself a sure foal-getter, ami his stock are not surpassed by the progeny of any horse which has ever served in the Southland district, whore he has travelled three years in succession. Royal Duke won the first prize when a three year old colt in Dunedin, and the second prize against all comer sat the Clutha. At the Agricultural Show, Dunedin, he also gained the first prize as a three year old colt- One of his foals, shown in Tokomairiro last year gained the first prize against numerous competitors. Royal Duke was got by Champion, (well known to he the best horse imported to this colony), out of the celebrated mare Jessy, imported in 1803, by Messrs. Emmery and Stragban, from Tasmania.' The same year she gained, the Taicri Agricultural Society’s first prize for the best colonial-bred mare, ami the second prize for the best draft mare at the Show, beating Mr. Nimmo’s black mare imported direct from Scotland, and the following year took prizes both in Dunedin and Taieri.
