CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
The first meeting of the new Council wag held in'the Council Chamber on Wednesday evening last, the 13th inst. Present : B. Naylor, Esq. (the Mayor), anil Councillors Hazlett, Marshall, Auckland, Beak, Clark, and Cox. The Mayor said: In opening the Council - he desired to make a few remarks. Though new to the position of Mayor, he was no stranger to the work of the Council, an 1 having narrowly watched the course of events, he doubted not but that his cx. perienoe materially assist him in carrying out the duties of his office. He did not expect to dazzle the world’by his brilliancy. I However, his intention was to devote his | energies towards the advancement and I prosperity of the town, and, if supported | by the Council, he had ho doubt of retiring ■ j at the expiration of bis term of office wiib j as satisfactory results as bis prcdeoessois. The r e were many things that required at- ■ tention. The most important however, j were the water-works and the bridge across the Molyneux. He was convinced of their j neossity, an 1 he would do his utmost to successfully carry them through. .With reference to the bridge, Councillor Hazlett , M.P.C - , while attending the Session, had started the wedge in the right direction, and ho hoped the Council would be able to drive it home. Councillor Hazlett said he was pleased to see Mr. Naylor occupy, the position of Mayor. He was a man of energy and good business tact, and ha hoped the Council work harm)dandy with . him.' With respect to the bridge, ho had obtained a promise from his Honor the Superintends :t that he would introduce and use his in . fluence towards getting passed a Bill which would enable the Corporation to nndertaka the erection of abridge, and further he had arranged to obtain the cash to construct Ji-' with. . ... The minutes of previous m ;otishg were read and confirmed. Inward correspondence, as follows, was read and received ; From the Coloiiial Secretary, re the election of Mayor; from Provincial Secretary, accompanying copy of Gazette containing proclamation appointing the Council a Board of Wardens for tho Clyde commonage ; from Mr. M‘Ginnis and othei s, in reference to petition praying for the extension of the line of railway from Lawrence to Teviot ; from the Provincial Secretary, notifying that tho sum of 600f. had been placed on the estimates for a Court House at Clyde ; and from the Alexandra Town Council, asking the co-operation of the Clyde Council in petitioning the Government to have all moneys voted for district roads vested in the hands of the various corporations for expenditure, i Councillor Hazlett said, while in Dunedin attending tho Provincial Council as the representative of the. district, having re- ‘ ceived a telegram from the Mayor of Alex- ! anclrr on the subject of the vote for roads, he waited on the Government, who refused to entertain the idea. They, however, said ' they would be happy to receive suggestions 1 from the Corporations as to the expenditure ■ of the votes. • Tho Town Clerk was instructed to reply 1 to the Alexandra Town Council, and say that this Council does not deem it advisable (in the face of the refusal of the Government, to deal further in the matter. 1 Councillors Marshall, Beck, and Clark wore appointed the Finance Committee, and 1 Councillors Hazlett, Auckland, and Cox ■ members of the Public Woks Committee. Messrs. George Facbe and Mr. M'Connoohie were appointed Valuators, at three guineas each. 1 j A Sub-Committee, consisting of the • Mayor and Councillors Beck and Clark, , was appointed to wait on Mr, F. J. Wilson and instruct him to lodge objections to the application of the trustee of the estate of J. D. Feraud f or a right to construct a race 5 from tho Wsi Ken Kori Crock,
