Sir George Bowen was entertained at dinner by the Melbourne Club last night. Villeueuve Smith against his wife and a co-respondent, named Armstrong, on the ground of their adultery is proceeding. Sydney, May 12. The inquest on the body of Captain Longmuir, of the ship Rifleman, who avas murdered at sea by the steward, who is named Krauss, was concluded to day. The murderer was committed for trial. The funeral of Captain Longmuir took place to day, a id was largely attend d. The returns of the yield of gold during the last four months show a decrease of five thousand ounces on the amount of the retn-ns of the previous four months. Caisn, an ex British Consul at Hankow, war arrested here to day on a charge of embezzling 2000f. of Government money at Hankow, and is to he sent in custody to England by the out-going mail steamer. A deputation waited upon the Minister for Lands to day, and urged upon him the necessity of appointing a Mining Inspector. Brisbane, May 14. A disabled steamer was seen from Cape Moreton on Sunday night. She proved to he from New Caledonia. The crank of her shafts was tarried away, so that the bearings of the engines were useless. She had also run short of provisions. The p aterson lelt Brisbane yesterday morning to render her assistance, and tow her to Sydney if necessary. Suh-luspoctor Johnson and the troopers by whom he was accompanied have returned to Cardwell after m iking an investigation into the murder of two fishermen at Green Island, No trace of their boat was found. At the Native camp at Point Cooper the party found the charred remains of two blacks, as well as of clothing ami potatoes. Mr. John Stna-t Mill, the celebrated political economist, died yesterday.
